Useable items and objects in dungeons - how to approach them?

Hello everyone, I enjoy the game to a great extend.

I wondered how objects should be approached and treated. Often it seems like they are absolutely not worth it.

Thus far I discovered that holy water is actually a really good item to have. They can be applied to urns, altars and confessional boxes. Also torches on chemistry tables seem to boost your torch to the maximum. Skeleton keys seem to safely open big treasure chest.

What about the book shelves? They almost always don't seem to be worth it. Also how does one safely defuse traps? What stats or characters are more proficent in disarming traps.
