This is something that needs to be rectified, but it's still early, and the endgame isn't in the game yet.
To make it more productive, what do you think would entice you into sending your soldiers to their death?
If you can't find a team your satisfied with, than seriously consider the guild and look at the options.
Every Class has a multitude of different skills. The least versatile class is the Highwayman and he still has a lot of positioning options thanks to his various Melee, Ranged, and self-moving attacks.
The Crusader is typically seen as a damage dealer, but with the right skills and trinkets, he can be an effective Tank-Healer. With Commanders Orders, my Lv. 2 crusader is healing for 5-8 health, non-critical, and he can draw enemy fire with his Shield ability. Maybe it's not the best, but it has been working, and it's refreshingly novel.
Lv. 3 Heroes is the first time you get heroes that refuse lower level missions. Yes, you may have got rekt, but this is a bit of an important point in the game. Sometimes you need to flee, and those first Veteran missions are where this first gets made very clear. If it doesn't work out, just flee, no big deal. Just keep trying until you get some breaks. As soon as you get those Lv. 3s to Lv. 4s, you'll start feeling right back in the groove.
And then you hit level 5 and Champion difficutly, where your characters are 5% stronger than they were at level 4, and enemies are 50% stronger than the last series of dungeons.
That jump is a big one, and results in a lot of dead units.
I don't see why it's unreasonable to make the Bosses a 1 one time only quest and let you choose which Trinket, out of their available pool, as a reward. Seems like it would be more...
rewarding.
Also tried going directly to the veteran level swine prince with my fresh level 3s.
Nope, nope, nope, RETREAT!
I can hardly imagine that .... With how the difficulty is at the moment lol ... Like everyone said end game is not there yet so who know how they will balance the game or what will chance before we see it.

Myself having a hard time finding a healer that is doing well or that isnt dying .... So im pretty much playing with 2 Crusader which does all the healing and stress control with houndmaster and plague doctor .... It take a good amount of time to clear Lvl 1 Dungeon but hey at least they arent getting affliction or dying all the time lol
*And after a few skill upgrades im almost at 30,000gold :')*
But i must say im getting annoyed with a loads crap of disease ... I think i got 1 Disease that is interesting for my houndmaster and it's mainly cause it's giving +15%DMG and spd reduction and a little acc reduction
