This anime is basically a crash course in every possible Japanese mythos/monster/demon you can come up with. It assumes you know what each demon does, what its powers are, its origin, etc. No amount of Japanese TV dramas could possibly prepare you for the cultural onslaught of this show since most shows don't deal with this kind of thing.
