PSA: DON'T CLICK THINGS!!!! Especially books.
You can only safely click, the back pack, crate, torch, suit of armor, and pristine fountain.
All books are bad. Everything else you need to consult this link.

http://darkestdungeon.gamepedia.com/Curio

If you have the correct item, use it and be rewarded other wise don't click it.

If you click everything, you're going to have a bad time.

This is the source of a LOT of the difficulty to new comers. When I first started I interacted with EVERY curio, I didn't even know they could be 'cured' and interacted with safely. I got so much stress, bleeds, and diseases from digging up shallow graves, reading books (I find it very funny that the game punishes you for reading!, lol), and poking idols.

Why do that when you can open the steam overlay, click on guides, then get this one?

I suggest you favorite this guide, and it will be there for you each time you open steam overlay.

Actually, the link I provided give probabilities, which I find helpful.

I'd argue the opposite. Early on heroes are very expendable, so you can easily risk screwing a few of them up on the off chance that some of them get lucky with good positive quirks. Especially since you are just going to get rid of the awful ones anyway.

Later on you definently do want to be cautious about interacting with some of the more risky curios like books, as your heroes already have had a lot of work put into them, and cost more money to maintain.

Well, there is a considerable difference between reading Harry Potter and exposing your brain to the red-stained pages of A Biography Of Our Lord And Savior The Daemon-Sultan Azathoth, Bonus Cookbook Chapter Edition With Foreword By Yog-Sothoth The One-In-All, and also the book is a leatherbound copy made from only the finest skins of human children.
