In the case you mention, you could use that option, get loot from the chest, and then just head back to the manor with 3 clicks. I commonly use it to heal my heroes up with food after a battle that ended the quest, interact with a curio after a quest ending battle or room discovery, or to explore a bit more if my party is still in great shape by the time I've achieved the quest goal.
By playing smart you can replace inventory consisting of remaining shovels, unused consumables, torches or food with more heirlooms, gold, gems etc before leaving. Don't gamble with food though, hold onto it until its your last remaining inventory spot so you don't take a hunger stress hit. If you replace shovels with loot only to run into an obstacle you can just use the red ribbon to return home etc.
There is literally no reason to use food to heal if you are going to leave the dungeon....
Wrong, it is. Quirks and Diseases you get in the end-screen depend on the amount of Hp and Stress your heroes have.
Of course, you can get a bad quirk even with full health and zero Stress (RNG) but stacking the odds in your favour is always good, isn't it? ;)
