So the narrator is dead?
From the video on the front page he shot him self... So does that mean you are remembering quotes from the letter through out the game or is he a ghost?

or did you ever think that YOU are the ancestor? And the intro scene is actually you after defeating the final fight of the Darkest Dungeon and thereby unleashing the hellish evil upon the world. You're doing exactly what the ancestor writes about in the letter...obssessively spending wealth and hiring workers with shovels to plumb the secrets of the estate.

Haven't gotten anywhere near beating the game, but that would be a neat little twist :D

fun idea yet it has holes.... You can clearly see the same estate in decay so unless they fixed it up I dout that it takes place in the past. Also does the opeing clip to the game not say clearly that you are going to the easte cus he called on you?

Problem with that theory is that in the intro video, he is sending out a request for help in the form of a letter.. and makes references to family. Then shoots himself.

"I beg you, return home, claim your birthright, and deliver our family from the ravenous clutching shadows of the Darkest Dungeon"

This implies he has called on someone from his family to come help his estate and avenge him.

I suppose so...still he says at the end of the road video "in that gaping abyss WE will find our redemption."

I wonder what he means by that. And he also speaks about everything as though he had already been through what you're going through. "You will arrive along the old road...you will face viciousness, violence..."

"In time you will learn the extent of my failings" might mean that you too will fail as he did.

I imagine there is something cyclical at work here. Also, isn't it possible that any reasonable family member won't actually come to such a damnable place, only someone seeking redemption. Also, what is the player character seeking redemption for!? What horrible thing did you do? Were you exiled for it? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!

I hear you, I was hoping the game was going to fully explain the story in the end. Maybe they are saving story expansion for some DLC

There are bad monsters. You kill them. That's the story.

Actually, I think everyone would love to see a Darkest Dungeon animated series.

Spoiler alert: The game is cyclical. While the cutscene depicts the first ever Ancestor, 'winning' the game isn't actually a victory, as you beat the final quests the world becomes more and more tentacle-y, which is why the Ancestor killed himself in the first place. You can't kill the final boss you simply beat it and it sleeps until the 'stars align' again. Time passes with these visions, you lose it, and you write a new letter, starting with 'Ruin has come to our family.'

so you are saying the same thing that the first guy said?

I think the final cutscence is just some flashback of the ancestor, and what he say is just being a sore loser, he is just fuse himself with an forggton god, and it just one of many gods, it is not the creater of the world. Don't turst the ancestor, he is liar, murder and traitor, he lure players to achieve his plain, become a god. The ancestor wasn't daed neither alive, after he shot himself he become some else, an elderich spirit, not a ghost. Because the ancestor lie to you, but we all know deads can't lie.

Very interesting itssirtou. I like this idea. Reminds me of a number of other stories / shows I've been into. Such as this old SciFi series from the 90's called Lexx. Where a part of the story is that the universe was cyclical, and we all live our lives over and over again, doing the same things over and over again.

"Time begins and then time ends, and then time begins once again. It is happening now, it has happened before, it will surely happen again. " - The Time Prophet
