You never need to restart. Usually it causes more harm than good, since no matter how badly you're doing you can't lose heirlooms.
That said, fighting Shambler is worth it- it drops damn good trinkets.
During a run with in complete darkness risk is high but reward is also high. The most troubling of those risk is a chance to find the Shambler in the dark.
It was bad luck. You can run from the Shambler.
