Just dont buy torches or food (maybe 4 if wish, but better any).
Throw them into a dungeon unequipped and try to reach as far as you can. Remember that with no torches, they wont stay long, but they make more gold and loot.
So try to advance, and risk (you lose anything, so you arent really risking at all), and retire from dungeon when one of them turns mad or die or when you know there is no chance to win next battle.
Then dismiss them, pick another 4 and repeat.
Who knows, maybe sometimes you will be surprised enough to see one of them leveling and turning into the real heroe.
And if not, who cares? Low level heroes are expendable :) Use them to make money before risking the leveled ones; they will need supplies and the gold for that.
Repeat until you recover. Discard the highly stressed / unusable ones and bring new ones at no cost.
Beyond that, it's mostly the same as has been mentioned already. Sell trinkets if you have any you don't expect to use, and if you *really* can't afford any supplies at all then bring your most expendable characters (presumably level 0s) on a short dungeon and just try to win without any supplies - if you have to you can even abandon the quest before finishing it to just get some loot to afford supplies for a better run.
This game is not for all people I would say. Some guys buy it before learning how it is.
This just happened to me today:
Sent 4 poor souls to their deaths and they came back singing.
Sent them again, with barely a few provisions, and the accumulated stress for both runs was around the 20s.
Now they are my favourite group since a long time, so I send them to a long run to the Weald but very well provisioned. Except I forgot to buy torches. They came back again with even less stress than before... They are bloody heroes!
I think I had shunned the Jester too much during EA and now I am rediscovering him. This group is a Graverobber, Jester, Abomination, Hellion party. I have to see how well they work in veteran dungeons but so far I am pleasantly surprised with the Jester inclusion.
And you can also use these moments to try new tactics and combinations that you dont want to try with your high level heroes. You can discover awesome things while testing with lower ones.
It certainly is a great opportunity to try a new game to try new strategies and teams, but I am hesitant whether I should start one or if I should wait until the "real full release" with the Merchant and the Town Events.
-2000 Gold, now all the customers have syphilis
I am a bit sad that that town events didn't make it in for release. But hopefully they'll be out soon.
