That or Google it I suppose.
some entry of a journal can be recovered on your explorations.
the game lore is rich, but don't expect a super detailed encyclopedia. it's all about suggestion and story telling.
Define = destroy | Suggest = create
Suggérer, c’est créer. Décrire, c’est détruire
Danke for the straight forward answer.

Of course there is the intro cinematic, and some journal entries before bosses. And the ancestor's voice from beyond whenever you do sth. awesome or awfully fail.
There is excellent narration throughout and the game is very atmospheric. The world feels alive.
SPOILER ALERT:
You are the family member of a wealthy nobleman living in a great mansion in a distant land. The wealthy nobleman is a hedonist however and is seeking thrills. After burning through all normal perversion, he gains an obsession with the rumors there is a great source of power hidden below his lands. He starts digging for it, obsessed, maddening and even killing invited guests, experts and villagers who are curious or concerned. He burns through his wealth, until he finally stumbles upon the hidden power. It turns out it is horribly cursed though and it almost instantly turns the land into a cursed hellscape that mutates and poisons. Horrible monsters arise, all the nobleman's sins and killed guests turn against him.
The nobleman ends up killing himself, but not before writing you a letter.
You inherit the nobleman's ruined, dilapitated and cursed estates. The only one mad enough to go there besides you, are throngs of would-be heroes thinking it's their chance for glory and wealth.
Basically all the locations and bosses, have a history with your ancestor. This is what binds them.
