Ran out of money. What do?
Just started the game.

I abandoned a quest because 2 members were dying the moment they saw the first enemy due to RNG where everyone chain attack the same person over and over while dodging every attack and stun. So I abandoned the quest because I don't want to lose my team.

Now I'm penniless. So what do I do now? Going on another mission without cash is going to be suicide.

I thought about just grinding low level quick and easy dungeons but my guys at level 3 refuse to go to level 1 dungeons (and the situation happened because I put them in level 3 dungeon in the first place). So that's not possible.

So what, do I just recruit a bunch of randos off the cart and send them on a suicide mission with 0 resource and hopefully get some cash before they expire? Is there other ways to do this?

Yep, that is the tried and true DD way to do it. Load up four saps looking for fame and glory into the meatgrinder and see if any of them are able to become a legend. You will always have new recruits coming in, so upgrade the stage coach so that four heroes are coming in every week to make this easier. Eventually you will have an antiquarian come in. She will help you make more money. Bring her on missions and use her (specifically her) to interact with curios. Every battle she wins and every curio she interacts with will award you either a minor antique (worth 500 gold and stacks up to 20 times) or a major antique (worth 1,250 gold and stacks up to 5 times). She also increases your gold stack size to 2,500 gold. Look for long dungeons and try to increase your scouting chance as much as possible. Sometimes there are secret rooms that spawn, but you need scouting chance to find them. Remember to save yourself a key for when you make it to the secret room, you'll need it to open the chest. Good luck, have fun!

Edit: I should mention that as long as you have one hero return to the hamlet, you will retain everything you looted in the dungeon. Fleeing a dungeon is a perfectly acceptable practice. Dismissing new recruits that quickly become afflicted or possess poor quirks is also acceptable.

Thanks. I kinda just did that. Load new guys into dungeon with 0 resource and abandon quest when they're dying, then dismiss them all. Not ethical by any means but at least they didn't die, and I can head-cannon my way into thinking at least I paid them something for their troubles.

Thx for the tips on antiquarian. Haven't recruited one yet but I'll keep an eye on that.

EDIT: Game probably should've had features about reselling your provision items and selling off your heirlooms and whatnot for cash. Currently you can only trade trinkets for cash. Considering there's some kind of swapping mechanics for heirlooms so obviously there's some kind of trading value for them and could've easily also included cash tbh. Same goes for provision items, at least let us stash and keep them if unused or something. But I digress.

You use the heirlooms to reduce the amount of money it costs to use the facilities at the hamlet. That is currently the heirloom to gold transfer available. If you have the DLC, you can build a bank with and it will produce 5% interest per week.

I see. So I looked it up and the town building is only part of the DLC? Would you say I need DLC for the full experience or is that DLC are more for veteran players? I'd looked around and people say apparently DLCs become part of the main game and might affect balance?

Sounds like I'll give DLC a shot one of these days after I familiarise myself with the base game. Thanks mate.

I recommend changing your playstyle a bit in the following way, playing with the light.

Loot, its quantity and quality depend on your light level. If you are 100% sure you're gonna win the fight on the next turn, kill the lights by dimming your torch completely.

Win the fight and get showered with stuff, keep the cash, throw away what you don't need. This also works with treasure chests, including the ones found in secret rooms. Buy every torch from the provision screen beforehand and every time you come across an opportunity for treasure, dim the torch.

This will help even short missions with new saps to be profitable. Combine that with an Antiquarian and you'll be making fat stacks in no time. Just remember to have the AQ be the one that clicks curios and chests.

Funnily enough, the heroes are the only thing in game that are completely disposable and FREE. When I got it, the Darkest Dungeon got loads easier (and DARKER). Upgrade stagecoach asap, then bs/guild so you can more get already upgraded heroes. Also, Antiquarian. If you search for loot, always do it with her (not just her in party, she needs to open chests HERSELF). Cartographer's is good but you better upgrade stagecoach to at least get lvl 2 heroes, it really helps

Nope. That's what your choice is at the moment. Throw some cannon fodder at a low level dungeon and hope for the best. In the short run, that's pretty much your only choice. That is rock-bottom desperation though. There ARE better ways to deal with the issue in the long run.

The key "better way" is to recruit some Antiquarians. (I typically have at least two). The Antiquarian's job is to make money. Put her in R3, take her into a dungeon, and have her open everything. She'll find extra loot, and, she can increase your raw gold carrying capacity (per pack slot).

Try to slot an Antiquarian into every other run. If you're really broke, then maybe 2 out of every 3 runs. The Antiquarian is the best way to make money.

If you have the Farmstead DLC, then you can build districts and additions to the Hamlet, and one of the things you can build is a Bank, the Bank will earn interest. It's going to be expensive though, and you will have to clear at least Orange level bosses to get the Blueprints.
