Edit: I should mention that as long as you have one hero return to the hamlet, you will retain everything you looted in the dungeon. Fleeing a dungeon is a perfectly acceptable practice. Dismissing new recruits that quickly become afflicted or possess poor quirks is also acceptable.
Thx for the tips on antiquarian. Haven't recruited one yet but I'll keep an eye on that.
EDIT: Game probably should've had features about reselling your provision items and selling off your heirlooms and whatnot for cash. Currently you can only trade trinkets for cash. Considering there's some kind of swapping mechanics for heirlooms so obviously there's some kind of trading value for them and could've easily also included cash tbh. Same goes for provision items, at least let us stash and keep them if unused or something. But I digress.
Loot, its quantity and quality depend on your light level. If you are 100% sure you're gonna win the fight on the next turn, kill the lights by dimming your torch completely.
Win the fight and get showered with stuff, keep the cash, throw away what you don't need. This also works with treasure chests, including the ones found in secret rooms. Buy every torch from the provision screen beforehand and every time you come across an opportunity for treasure, dim the torch.
This will help even short missions with new saps to be profitable. Combine that with an Antiquarian and you'll be making fat stacks in no time. Just remember to have the AQ be the one that clicks curios and chests.
Nope. That's what your choice is at the moment. Throw some cannon fodder at a low level dungeon and hope for the best. In the short run, that's pretty much your only choice. That is rock-bottom desperation though. There ARE better ways to deal with the issue in the long run.
The key "better way" is to recruit some Antiquarians. (I typically have at least two). The Antiquarian's job is to make money. Put her in R3, take her into a dungeon, and have her open everything. She'll find extra loot, and, she can increase your raw gold carrying capacity (per pack slot).
Try to slot an Antiquarian into every other run. If you're really broke, then maybe 2 out of every 3 runs. The Antiquarian is the best way to make money.
If you have the Farmstead DLC, then you can build districts and additions to the Hamlet, and one of the things you can build is a Bank, the Bank will earn interest. It's going to be expensive though, and you will have to clear at least Orange level bosses to get the Blueprints.
