This question is a frequent flier here and there is never a pleasing answer to it. You should check out character mods that look interesting to you and play with them, see if you like them, and if you feel that they diminish your experience, remove them.

Personally, I like lots of character mods. Every now and again I come back to Darkest Dungeon with the plethora of things I installed and it pleases me to see such variety in the way of available characters when I've forgotten what half of them are good for and who has good synergy with who.

First time shortly after trying game got a new class mod that i liked but was quite OP,was fun for a bit but got boring fast got rid of it and never bothered with classes mods again, then after quite a while i learned how to mod the game and make my own changes to characters

I recommend learning how to mod your own characters, tweak their stats and such is basically just changing numbers with notepad/notepad++

Also play Hollow Knight if you haven't.
I think my favorite modded class is the beastmaster. He's not exactly new, per se, but he's still a cool dude.

The vanilla stock characters had to be tweaked for years before they got to become "balanced", anything you download is unlikely to have the same amount of thought put into it and may be an insane pick for specific situations.

I'd say if you're into downloading them just get the ones that look interesting and don't think about mechanics.
