A week will pass via a completed/failed mission - as well as partially completed/failed missions, so long as a certain amount of progress was made before leaving.
Most veterans will avoid using respite facilities as much as possible via managing stress during dungeons, not after them. This will save you gold and prevents heroes from being decommissioned for 1-3 weeks.
Afflictions are removed at 0 stress, be it via dungeons, or waiting for it to passively decrease each week at the Hamlet.
