And I never ever bring a hero with one of the stress increasing quirks into a dungeon where that's the most common monster type.
I've played the game for years, yet there are times I just won't bother inspecting the smaller details - but then, overconfidence, yadda-yadda. Surely this awesome team I picked will be fine despite the little quirks which might end up increasing a stress-nuke when I fall asleep at the wheel.
I don't either. I only mention it because if anyone truly, honest-to-god cares about decimating the AI in the most universally efficient way, then it is the way to go. The principle can still be put into practice when using sub-optimal or off-meta teams, even if it's not a full-time specialized giga-chad stun comp up to their eyes in speed, accuracy, stun-chance and range/flex.
I had the baddest day at the office yesterday. Stygian finally felt like one and everything that could went wrong - did. I've lost two more heroes, one of them is Legendary one, raised from 0 from the beginning of the game, one of the most loved characters.
I had to flee many battles, abandon missions, my best heroes performed the worst. My last run of the day was the biggest nightmare - I felt like I entered the Giant's land cos I fought 5 or 6 of them, at the very least. Every battle room - there was a Giant, every hallway - Giant there was. Old little lady accompanied him as well (forgot her name) - always in stealth and can deal nasty stress/blight damage. Every battle felt like a boss fight, we were squeezing everything to just survive and move on. It was medicine mission and I only had one piece of it and my team was fully demolished so I had to camp, which didn't help much cos one of the heroes was already afflicted. At one point I considered to call it a day, but I needed the money and pressed on. After few more fights we were basically done with - entire team was 100+ stress affected, with 3 afflicted heroes and 1 virtuous. Scouts revealed last 2 quest locations and I dragged them all on forward. Surviving another battle against all odds, it just felt wrong to give up now. I pushed my half-dead team, with my hellion literally having zero HP, deaths' door, and affliction to the last hallway, where 2 of the remaining medicines located. I knew it was madness but when you're so close you just have to go. Last hallway, no sight of enemies yet we got attacked midway - Giant, lady and someone else. After enduring their first waves of attacks I finally gave in, as three of my heroes were fully 200 points stressed out. I flee, everyone gets their heart attack check, and hellion doesn't pass it. Vanished, in thin air, just like that. Thankfully, it was after retreat so I got her trinkets back. In that moment of madness, I smile and think: 'Good riddance. Weakness cannot be tolerated.' I just cannot get myself to like that character, for some reason.
During that mission I felt the rage burning in my cells, my blood boiling and that sweet treacherous whisper in my head: it's time to rage quit. I did not, of course, and as much as it was frustrating, deep down inside I knew it was all on me - I have made many mistakes and they all cost me dearly. I surely got unlucky here and there, but I never complain when RNG blesses me, so why should I when it plays for other side? All fair game. What's funny, during one moment of panic I thought 'did I save?' and following 'oh, wait..' made me smile. Old habits.
One of the mistakes was taking completely wrong team to fight the second Hag, realizing I miscalculated her position and nobody can really hit her, so I had flee, thankfully without big damage, but coins god wasted. Hence the following question: how do you know the actual enemy position and if there's an indicator somewhere along their stats or you can only guess it by your heroes attacks? Like, there can be 2 enemies against you, but it doesn't mean they are always in 1 & 2 position, unlike your team.
Also, arbalest. I like the girl, but it always feels like she's under-performing and can always do better. Sure, she can deal some decent damage from the back, but I'm always better off with Plague Doc/Occultist instead. Besides, she never fits in any team I play - you know those team names you get for character synergy, like The Red Hook, Good Bad and Ugly, etc? When arbalest is on my team I never ever get any names and feel like she's an outcast. Any tips on playing her best and characters that will utilize her abilities best?

Someone mentioned that higher level dungeons stings on Stygian and I can feel that sting now. After playing relatively well, easing through some missions I got cocky, started to feel invincible, and well, we all know what overconfidence means in the darkest dungeon. Also, remember me saying I don't really have stress issues? Now I have. ;D I also learned that if you're feeling salty, angry and above all, tired, it is better to take a break, find yourself some Abbey or Tavern, relieve the stress, take a nap and get back with full sanity restored, just like your heroes. I also started to rush through some dungeons, instead of taking notes about new enemies, attacks and bosses. I got complacent and paid for it. So I already prepared pen and paper for my future runs. I surely am massively damaged my chances of beating the game now, with 5 heroes being dead, but I still want to complete at least one DD mission. Despite all the frustration, I find beauty in it and glad it happened.
It was a great reminder to be mindful, take things slowly and never take any success for granted.
One of my fav battling quotes is 'Back to the pit' as I get chills every time I hear it, and yesterday it should have been: 'Back to the hamlet' every time me ass was handled to me on a silver plate. ;D
Glorious experience.
Hey Bort, all good. Despite the disagreement on the preferred Hamlet upgrades, I am grateful for all the posts from all of you, in fact, it's more helpful to have a different perspective, rather than reading same message being repeated all over again. I mean sure, the core tips are the same, but I really like, how every single one of you adds to my knowledge and experience and I'm taking notes from y'all. You've been the first one to reply too, and rather quick so I appreciate your input, man.
All of you have been very helpful, and I thank you all. Great community, and I am happy to be a part of it now.
RopeDrink, I won't quote parts of your message as it will add more layers to already gigantic essay I wrote here, so will just summarize: thank you so much for great tips. I don't have shield-breaker yet as I'm saving her for past-Stygian experience but notes are taken. I will get back to your message once more when I'm in game but I see big value in taking camps early on now, as it makes more sense and I'm sure if would help me to avoid scenarios from yesterday as buffing my chars before battle can be as life/stress saving as after, if not more. Best way to fight fire is to prevent it, they say.
Appreciate all the help, man. ^
My Reynauld's klepto got locked after first tutorial mission, but I accidentally cured it few missions later on some odd-lookin' altar with holy water, and ever since I carry 4 bottles of each, all the time.
As for stress increasing quirks - that's a very good point. I'm sure I've made that mistake couple of times, wondering why some heroes will start a mission with 20+ stress in advance. Now I see why. Thanks, Pete.
her healing buff is cool, she can destealth and remove marks ( a must have for a certain boss in a certain area) also, she marks and has +dmg% against marked. run her with BH as a mini-dps id say?
also, the team names not as serious as youd think. 4 hellion have HELLS BELLES, 4 lepers have Rot squad, OCC/JEST/BH/MAA form Inglorious bastards etc.etc.
that was me :PPP also, i was quite surprised, after seeing how much DD youve been playing :), i personally, on stygian, could do like, 2 runs in one sitting, then id feel my heart pumpinh, my hands sweating etc, thats where id take a break.
mini-spolier/advice for first DD please make sure that your team has at least some movement abilities. getting shuffled there WILL happen, and if not ready, itll sting like a mf
Basically, this: The Hag boss. There're the pot and the hag, right? Two positions so I assumed it's 1 and 2. I brought two Lepers and they mostly focus on attacking the first two spots, but when the fight began they couldn't land a hit on her - only the pot, thus the positions were 2 and 3? Or is it because each of them (pot, hag) take 2 positions in general, meaning that pot is located at 1+2, and the hag is at 3+4? Actually, if that's the case I understand it now.
With Prophet it was obvious since he has 3 pieces of wood before him, hence he's located at 4.
That makes her rather fit for some specific fights, tho? I might be underestimating those skills/perks due to lack of experience/knowledge but she still feels like not the best for that position. her healing is good, but Plague Doc can remove blight and bleed, for instance. I will try to play more with her - I only have one Bounty Hunter and I think they cannot pair together yet (different lvls), but thanks for the heads up. ^
As for team names, so they mean nothing? D: I thought it meant some special synergy/chemistry or something. Oh, and 'Inglorious Bastards'? Damn, I have to try it. :D
Also, tempted to play 4 Lepers, honestly. Nothing seems to bother them much. Might be one of my fav class - you cannot break what's already broken.
Oh yess, it was your first message here actually. :D As for my playtime - I couldn't stop playing, man. I procrastinated alot because of it, but I got obsessed with the game. 'One more dungeon run' I think and then play one more - the thrill of danger and just general adventuring is amazing, which I guess, what I lack IRL. Also, as I said, things were going quite well so I just rolled with them and didn't want them to stop. Also, the stress is addicting - my cannon boss fight was probably one of the most exciting, thrilling and anxious experiences I ever had in video games. :P I was surely done after the fight, you saw the screenshot - but it was glorious. Wholesome even. :P I like the bad just as much as the good, and just appreciate the thrill in general, I suppose? Getting out of the dungeon, barely making it, yet victorious, is a beautiful feeling. It adds meaning and sweet taste to it. But it's not even in overcoming hardships and suffering, but the visual style of DD - how simple, yet elegant it looks. When you begin your new mission and your team just going through the halls in search of something - there's magic in it, I absolutely love it. I'm terrified to venture into my first Darkest Dungeon mission but at the same time I am excited. I simply love the game. :P
Thanks for the DD mission tip: I plan on bringing Reynauld and Dismas, and those two can move alot. I actually like moving teams, even tho it can get messy. I haven't decided on other two characters yet. Third one would have been the Occ, but he was that Legendary hero that fell into abyss yesterday and never returned.
tbh, im not the best person to ask, since i dont use her often either. for me, she feels like i have to build my team *around* her to make things work, not a fan of her tbh.
yeah, basically. they are just fun references/easter eggs mostly. you can find the list of every team combo online. also, leper on 3 and 4 is a death sentence imho. they cant do anything from there :(((
i totally understand you. gotta say, when i first started playing, i felt the same way! :)
and yeah, the style and the way thing look... stunning!
welp, one thing im sure of, when youll get your hand on the Crimson court.. its gonna be a whole new experience! the bosses there are... just, WOW. youll see what i mean soon ;)
Seeing as ARB/MUS is relatively slow - if you're going for mark comps, it's typically best to have someone mark for her (such as OCC, who is fast enough to open most fights for it, giving all mark-centric heroes the benefits as soon as possible). Alas, this is only worthwhile against targets that tend to persist longer than a round, because most fights can already be won in 1-3 rounds without burning non-damage turns to increase someone else's damage later on. In most cases, just hitting something twice will suffice.
Short-list:
-- AoE anti-stealth, which can also cheese the Swine boss.
-- Has a camping skill which increases speed for the team.
-- Unlike a lot of heroes, her projection is bread-and-butter.
-- Red Hook have a habit of balancing speed vs health. So, due to being one of the slower heroes in the game, she's surprisingly tanky.
-- Has a good single-target heal which increases healing received by the target from all sources - including her own heals, other healers, self-heals, food, camping, and FLG's healing-over-time effect.
I don't bother with mark very much, but an example mark-comp would be something like:
ARB/MUS > HM > OCC > BH
It's a somewhat static composition, but you can manually shuffle them around quite a bit. As someone who enjoys Blackjack, I would often swap HM into R2 and OCC into R3 to avail of Abysal Artillery. After all, OCC is the fastest in the group, so you typically want him marking for the HM/ARB/BH, thus making him an awkward stunner, so I'd let the HM take over in R2. Alas, this means you need to manually move (or be shuffled) when you want/need stress-healing from the HM.
There are numerous other mark comps to try, but it's not required to have a good time with ARB/MUS.
For example, my general off-meta shenanigans (veteran onward) = Flare > Snipe > Sidearm/Quickfire > Bandage. When using her as a dedicated healer - especially when stealthers are on the cards - I like to use spare turns to ramp up her speed via Side/Quick. If you are lucky enough to walk into new fights with buffs still up, she will out-speed everyone else, and likely kill or maim an R3/R4 priority and/or get the heals rolling out ASAP.
However, it is a janky off-meta style that I wouldn't recommend to someone who is actually trying to complete Stygian and/or the game for the first time.
As for the Giant/Hag combo, this is dangerous because the Hag usually acts first in a round while the Giant acts last. The dangerous event is that the Giant death door's someone with Smackbranch at the very end of a round and then Hag acts first before anyone can heal and finishes them.
So in Weald you want at least one strong stunner to make sure it doesn't happen by making sure the Giant is stunned at the end of the round. It's sometimes a good idea even to bring a +stun trinket for this purpose. Another option is to have a character with a de-stealth skill and make sure the Hag is dead first round.
There's a MUCH worse version of this encounter on Champion level with a character called Hateful Virago who turns anyone you kill into a deadly fungus that blocks all healing skills, really fun when you're dealing with the Giant and the Hag already.
Glad to hear you´re enjoying the game man, keep on rocking!
As you mentioned, this game can be so heartbreaking when you are doing well but suddenly things turn against you. Sometimes, when you lose a hero you are attached to, or many of them, it feels like giving up, but that is what the game is about, overcoming your failures and moving on.
Reading your story has made me remember how amazing the first sensations felt when I was a beginner, so I hope you continue your journey and keep reporting us. Good luck, soldier, leave nothing unchecked, there is much to be found in forgotten places.
R3 and R4 Lepers can heal, distress and buff themselves and if shuffled there will be no issues. ;D Surely not the most optimal team in the world, but sounds like something fun I want to try.
RopeDrink, it was an excellent, EXCELLENT character class summary/introductory, and top explanation of her best (and possible) use as well. Thank you so much, greatly appreciated. I'm with you on not being a fan of using her on mark compositions, as it juts not that sufficient for me. I used her with the Occultist mostly, but didn't pay much attention to her speed camping buffs and also flare. I liked the idea of it, but definitely missed the destealth part which makes it critical for my wield runs now. I'm not sure about her being dedicated (and single) healer but there's room for experiments.
As for your your janky off-meta, I actually like it. As someone said there are no bad characters - just a bad use of them.
Oh, so that explains why most lvl 0 characters start their first [and only] available dungeon with some stress points? And if a hero has [insert a region name] phobia, he/she will accumulate more stress during the fight, not from the start, right?
I find it hilarious how you gain some of the quirks. Your hero goes through ruins again and again, and now he is a COVE tactician, even tho he has never been there. On the other hand, sometimes it's the opposite. Dis and Rey fought lots of bandits during one mission and after that run both gained related quirks: one got negative with fear to humans, and the other one got positive, mankind hatred or something. It was wholesome.
Giant/Hag combo probably the most anxiety-inducing one for me atm - I'm not sure who I dislike the most. I usually go for ladies in the back row first, but Giant hits like a train and if it's a crit - it's an imminent death door for support/low hp character.
Thank you for the battle hints, Pete, appreciate it.
Hey, thank you for encouragement, Bort - and for your support as well. I re-read your message again today as I needed that reminder [what this game is about]. I'm afraid I'm rocking no more. :'D
I feel like I hit rock bottom with my journey and stuck at a point where I don't know how to move forward. Just couple of days ago I was doing well, my max stress was around 30-40 points for just a few heroes at a time. I was dungeon-crawling lvl 5 missions with confidence and success, bringing glory and coins to my Hamlet, but after that day when everything went south, I feel like I lost my touch. I don't know how it happened, but mistakes were made and now it's a payday time. At one point I remembered all the messages about being foolish to do your first playthrough on Stygian and I thought they were right, but I shrugged that thought off, eventually. As delusional as I am, one thing I know for sure: Stygian won't get easier. It's me who get better with time and practice, and the best practice is the hardest one, so ain't no way I'm downgrading now. Besides, I like Stygian difficulty - limitations, mostly death count, make it a bit harder to enjoy at times, cos I hate fleeing battles and prefer my crew to die trying, and I fled so many times these past days it's disgusting, haha. :P
But yeah, I started to think about restarting my save because I have 400 coins and cannot fund my next expedition. I have lots of high level heroes that are massively stressed. Another thing - I don't really have dedicated stress healers and I never had one, and the crusader is the only one character that I have in my roster. He isn't the best as he can only distress one hero at a time but it usually was enough for me. I used Lepers, very self-sustainable character; highwayman is another on who would often distress himself with all the crits and high-dodge skill and I managed stress due to camping quite effectively, till now. i don't have any Jesters - I've got bad one sin the beginning so I never bothered with them, I don't have any hound masters, in fact I didn't even know they can manage stress too, for the entire team till RopeDrink mentioned them and I look that class up. So now I'm on my week 60+ something, without coins, without stress re-leavers and frankly, not knowing what to do.
I really am disappointed in myself, truth be told. As I said I knew form the beginning the chances of me beating Stygian on my first try are super tiny, but deep down I still had faith in that 1%. Or maybe, I was just reckless. I mean, basically same, right? :P
I don't want to abandon my save, despite its inevitable end. I still want to make something out of it, but fresh beginnings sounds more and more appealing, with each defeat/hero death.
I've actually got one of me heroes back, due to From Beyond event and I wonder if that hero I resurrected still counts to that death limit or not? Or should I orient on the actual numbers at the graveyard? They ain't lookin' good anyway. :D
1- Since this is your first run ever and you don´t may want to end it by abandoning, just go ahead to the next mission with no resources and do your best until the last drop of blood is spilled. There is a tiny chance you can survive with some crit scouts and good rolls on battles. If you´re not lucky, don´t worry, there is no shame for a brave warrior in dying holding your weapon on the battlefield.
2- If you don´t care at all, just quit and start from the scratch. Use your learnings and do it better next time.
One piece of advice that I can give you, although controversial, is to take an antiquarian for your next playthrough. She is a big risk - big rewaed character since is almost useless in fights, but she gets a looot of money by opening curios herself. Do not bring her to large expeditions, champion dungeons, nor places where you are forced to bring mission items and take care of bringing a reliable team along with her and you will eventually see yourself swimming in mountains of gold.
Once you're more skilled, return and try to rescue it. However, you might indeed be borked. The solutions involve either letting heroes die or spending weeks like sand in a desert.
You'll end up throwing out enough water it would have been cheaper to just use the sanitarium. Those altars hardly ever spawn.
If you throw out the water near the end of the mission so you keep a 1750 stack of gold, you'll find an altar after you throw out the water pretty often. If you don't, then it's another 1750 gold over the 800 you're spending on buying the water.
Even warrens scrolls don't spawn all the time, but at least you have torches in your inventory anyway.
--
You can certainly win using only leper teams.
However, the leper is very much a bad character in that literally any team with a leper can be improved by trading the leper in for someone else.
Often losing the leper lets you improve a second slot at the same time.
--
If you want to hit 0% death rates in the weald you have to plan around giants specifically. There's an easy one-person-one-button solution given they can only hit ranks 1 and 2.
But there are several other more-troublesome ways to ensure they can't crit someone to 0 on round 1. Two of them involve using a leper...
--
There are a total of 83521 possible team combos. What?
The only place to find lists of *good* combos is the guide I wrote myself.
The good teams are so good it feels like cheating. "Is...is it supposed to be possible to play the game like this?" No, probably not.
There are approximately 30,000 reasonable team combos, when we eliminate stuff like [leper starts in row 4].
That's part of the journey, so all good. ;D Oh, and I forgot to mention I still have some trinkets to sell. Not many, and I want to keep some valuable ones, but I can surely scrap for another mission. I like your first option much much more - the way you described it as well - it can be a great finale of my first Stygian experience. Thank you. ;D
I'm not going to abandon my run - especially knowing how prone I am to it, as I've restarted many other games in the past. I have that urge and perfectionism still runs strong in me. But thing is - restarting now will only embrace that feeling, and when things start going astray on my next Stygian run - and they will - I will be feeling that urge even stronger. So I will keep going. I want to do some low lvl runs to get more money, upgrade my first 4 heroes and send them into the Darkest Dungeon. My Guild is at 100%, and Smithy just needs one last weapon upgrade which is if I'm not mistaken I already have all the needed heirlooms at my disposal. Just have to decide on the crew.
My run is practically over, but there's still time to end it gloriously. Also, anything is possible.
Yes, I will. I've actually never used her due to my ignorance, thinking she's too weak and just a gold-character, but I looked her up today and people do wonders with her. She might not be the hero you bring to a boss fight [although, why not?], but with proper care, and maybe protection by Man at Arms she will be valuable party member. I actually will try her on my current run if she'll appear - I can definitely use some treasure-hunting skills now.
Thanks alot, man!
Once I've hit the part where you mentioned your guide I immediately went to look it up..
Darkest Dungeon frustrating you? Would you prefer it challenges you so little it's boring?
If not, don't read this guide. Darkest Dungeon is most fun if you're kind of bad at it. The bulk of the gameplay is in learning to play better.
..and closed it after these words as that's basically it. The beauty of my blind Stygian run is that I don't know the game and I'm bad at it, and when good things happen (or, I 'happen' to them) - they feel amazing. The most tricky thing is to keep yourself sane when you're so bad/wrong that it's frustrating. To keep yourself going, knowing that eventually, you will get better. One way or another.
The numbers are crazy, by the way. But I think Geb mentioned the combination of named teams since we particularly discussed those.
Yeah, I'm not abandoning it, but I won't be starting a new save before I finish this one. The reason is simple: after playing for another 50-60 hrs, or more, I will be way too emotionally and mentally detached from the save I'm now playing I won't even care.
As for holy water - you're correct, there are some leftovers from time to time, although I don't throw them out and use on my heroes. But yes, I'm still not sufficient enough with my inventory management, that is true.
Thanks for the Leper tips, by the way, appreciate your knowledge. ^ Oh, and I will get back to your guide, for sure, the beginning left me intrigued.
//is it really 83521? thats crazy
