If you do the first, most items suggest themselves, for instance, but some are ridiculous.
Two super spoilers.
For instance, torching a pile of scrolls is great and zaps a bad quirk, but torching a pile of books just gives you a massive stress bomb.
And one that you would nearly never get randomly.
Wine crates in the Crimson Court if you apply a shovel to them gives you a pile of firewood, the only way you can camp in CC missions. Would you ever guess that without just randomly throwing every object at every curio? Didn't think so.
to be fair, for a guy who grill/bbq at my summerhouse, wine barrels are sometimes used :)
Question mark - unknown result
X mark - no effect
gold mark - to get gain loot
white mark - sanity effect on curio
green mark - heal effect on curio
i feel i am a kid plays Game Books with dice. hahaha.

Looks sharp? bandages
Looks old or sick? Herbs
Does it have green stuff coming out of it? Antidote
Does it literally say "Put torch here to kill yourself"? Keep walking
Same with the Antiquarian. The caretaker tells you what she does when you recuit her.
Do you really have the game to force pause and show a textbox labled "TUTORIAL: Hit enemys till they die"?
