FFT indeed has the best video game story every written, if you play the PSP version (Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions). That version had professinal writers re-write the entire script in Shakespeare. The lines were honestly good enough (or better) to be on Broadway. By contrast, the original version was written by extremely poor translators (who are probably Jpnese themselves).

If by "like DD", you mean "rogue-like which kills you mercilessly but is fun", look into Sword Of The Stars: The Pit.

It's uncanny that the exact same adjectives come to mind when I think about FFT: Shakespearean, best-game-story-ever-written. Pity they never made FFTA3, and none who follow the footstep ever came close to making the dream come true again, not WoTL, not Fire Emblem.

Every class was fun to play with. Assassin with their shadow stitch, time mages, dual wielding soldiers...etc.

Try Into the Breach. It's a squad-based tactical game where a team of heroes in giant mechs fights against overwhelming odds. Except it's a million times better, because there's almost no RNG.

Other games I'd recommend: Space Pirate and Zombies, Star Crawlers, FTL. They're not exactly the same as DD, but somewhat indie and enjoyable games.

FFT will always have a place in my heart for its immaculate writing. I felt it was a pity they did not continue making quality SLGs and instead turned attention to make bravely default series + octopath, all of which are inferior and bland turn-based rpgs.

To the above FFT fans, I've never played any of them but have to contend with them in FFXIV ^^

Square always has and likely always will pay homage to games respecting its universe and also make a habit of ensuring those playing newer games aren't short on fan-service in-case they are there purely because of liking some of their past titles. FFXIV has incorporated fan-favourite bosses from many past titles (Kefka, Exdeath etc).

Here, enjoy Thundergod Cid from FFT. The hardest boss in the entire 24man raid (which suits his reputation as being a broken character in standard form). Even speaks (almost entirely) in limit-breaks.

All this talk of FFT needs mention of Tactics Ogre. TO is made by some of the same people who did FFT. The SNES version can be hair pulling difficult since it has permadeath, the PSP version is a lot more polished but also a lot more forgiving with its permadeath mechanic. The plot is surprisingly dark for a game in that era and if you like Game of Thrones, this is the closest thing to a game version.

I wish they'd port the PSP version of FFT to something, like say PC. I'd play it just for the text dialogue. I've never seen a video game written like that, before or since, Japanese or not. Not being able to read it in its entirety because I've never owned a PSP, is 1 of my gaming regrets.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but it's good.
I wouldn't mechanically compare Final Fantasy Tactics to Darkest Dungeon though. Very different games in their approach to combat AND how they tell a story.

What? No. Final Fantasy Tactics is inspired by real world events. Well not the magic and stuff, obviously, but that's pretty by the numbers for Final Fantasy. Collect magic stones, ancient evil trying to resurrect, blah blah blah. The games major conflict is heavily based on the War of the Roses. They changed it to the War of the Lions and added some artistic license, but the seed of real events is there.

ANYWAY... back on topic. I can't think of any turn-based rpg's that remind me distinctly of Darkest Dungeon. Is it the bleak tone TC is interested in or the game mechanics? 'Cause games that expect the player to die and are built around it are fairly common these days. Rogue Legacy and Castle in the Darkness spring to mind, but I'm sure there are plenty of others.
LISA: The Painful rpg is probably the closest example I can think of regarding a dark turn-based rpg... but lemme warn you right now. That game is really freakin' dark. Extremely. Described as: "A life ruining gaming experience" by its creator. My opinion? I don't know if it ruined my life, but it was definitely a gaming experience. A dark, dark gaming experience.
