That aside, you kind of figured it out already - play more offensively. Stun or kill enemies to stop them from acting, accuracy and speed are crucial, bring lots of damage, make sure you can eliminate the enemy back ranks and have skills that work in different positions for when you get shuffled.
DD2 is arguably the most difficult (non-CC) mission in the game. Man-at-Arms is borderline mandatory here, and this is also a great mission for Houndmaster. I equipped my HM with two +dmg trinkets (e.g., Fuseman's Matchstick) so my MaA was guarding the HM during the mini boss fights. My other two members were Abom / Flag here, since they are highly useful support characters.
DD3 is either really easy or dicey. Basically, you should prepare your party as if you're going to fight the Brigand 16 Pounder. In other words, you need an accurate & hard-hitting team that can strike the back ranks. Hellion is great here (hint: consider using Adrenaline Rush on turn 1 of the mini boss fights). This mission gives you extra opportunities to camp, so you might consider bringing heroes with nice camp skill buffs (e.g., Vestal's Bless). Also the Jester with Battle Ballad makes sense. The most important thing is to bring at least two heavy hitters for the back rank, though. My party was Vestal / Jester / Highwayman / Hellion.
DD4 is not really a dungeon; it's only the final boss fight. This fight is not super difficult, but you should be prepared to deal with stress so I would probably bring a Jester (may want to consider Finale anyway). Plague Doctor is pretty good here (don't forget to spec Battlefield Medicine). You can kinda just bring whatever, and you'll probably do fine, but I brought Dismas / Reynauld so I could notch off that achievement. Crusader actually works pretty well (due to Inspiring Cry).
One final note about DD4, make sure you bring all the antivenoms/bandages/etc.
