The game has a steep learning curve, and expects you to make hard choices. However, once you learn all of the mechanics and formulate good tactics and strategies, then it isn't all that hard.
The RNG complaints regarding this game are deeply exaggerated. The player can mitigate the effects of the RNG 98% of the time. 2% of the time, they can experience terrible luck, but experienced players will know how to manage this.
The game gives you all of the tools and the knowledge to succeed.
Pretty easy if you know what youre doing , pretty damn impossible if you dont
Most people that say DD is hard and complain about RNG haven't played much the game. It will take you a few hours to learn the classes, skills and enemies, during these hours you'll be having your ass handed to you, that's when some give up and write a bad review about the game...
Once you get past those learning hours, you realise the game ain't that hard, but the RNG is still there and you might have to retreat from a few dungeons or even lose some heroes, but again, when you know what you're doing, losing one hero isn't that big of a deal, you can always recruit and train new ppl from the stage coach.
Also, I disagree that this game has a steep learning curve, it's rather brutal on new players and there aren't many games that do it. Once you get used to the game, it's really fun and the RNG doesn't seem so bad.
I feel the core confusion comes from different game apporoaches. In some games, you make your character/team/gameplay style, and that lets you beat the game. Games like the Elder Scrolls do that, and that lets you beat the game. Succeeding is the default with occasional branching paths, and everything else is an exception that needs you to reload the game. Failing is not a case that is considered in those games.
DD on the other hand, just gives you a pile of tools and challenges. Winning is expected, but so is loosing. It's up to you, and the game goes on either way. It's similar to the souls games in that regard. You don't get to retry immediately, but that's a good thing, since when you failed it was usually your approach to the problem that was wrong. When people say "git gud", they don't mean it in a derogative way, but they're trying to say "reevaluate the way you play. you have the wrong mindset. Don't play to reach the end that is set out for you by the plot, but instead play each seperate challenge with minimal loss. This will eventually add up to a success." In this game, that translates to "don't gamble". If you can't kill, then stun. If you can't stun, try something else. If everyone's survival relies on rng, then you did something wrong. There are clutch moments, sure, but RNG is not your enemy, nor is it your friend. It's not magic or "luck", it's just a thing that exists. Use it.
In that sense, you can't really 'lose' Darkest Dungeon, but its sometimes hard to realize that with how brutal it is on your expeditions.
It's entirely possible to never lose a hero.
The game is hard. It is hard by design. You can mitigate errors, and get good at the game so that you don't lose a ton of heros... but you'll still lose... and the dungeons will still be brutal.
Anyone that claims that the game is easy, and that they don't lose heros is completely full of s**t. I am 115 hours in and have almost beaten every boss (2 left), and though I don't lose heroes often, it does happen. And all champion dungeons are still stressful. When you understand your party synergies it is EASIER... but definitely not easy. Noobies, have fun learning the systems and getting better, but don't expect an easy game. It is designed to be the antithesis of that.
