What heroes were you using, what were their abilities, and what trinkets were equipped (if any)?

I don't have any recommendations on first bosses, unfortunately. But you might want to get trinkets for your heroes to assist in stat boosts. There are, however, some trinkets that have good buffs, but may come with debuffs too.

My first boss was the Necromancer. And, I must confess that he is challenging.

Do not be discouraged; the game is hard, but as the saying goes, "fall once, stand twice."

Necromancer easiest one.

Whichever one is offering a good trinket.

All non-final bosses are gimmicky and you should never expect to win on your first try. Go scouting and/or use expendable teams.

Swine Prince and necromancer are the easiest bosses.

I don't usually recommend people to spoil themselves in the game, but you should probably check out the boss on the wiki, so you can properly build a team to kill the boss.

Like, for the hag boss fight, you're mostly just trying to kill her quickly. There are strategies out there that let you self sustain against that boss. but those aren't exactly good strats.

I think the Necromancer is the most forgiving. Everything works against them, and their big gimmick is that they spawn smaller enemies, which are usually pretty simple to defeat.

Swine Prince is also pretty easy, if for no other reason that Sewers bosses tend to be on very short paths due to the grid layout. Beyond that, bring an Arblest with Launch Flare, and you've removed his most powerful attacks.

The Flesh can also be pretty straightfoward as well, particularly if you've got some good multi-target abilities. A Plague Doctor and a Houndmaster can really rack up the DoTs and damage.

I think the Flesh is actually quite hard if you get unlucky with the transformations. The Swine prince can also kill players if they're unaware of the gimmick.

In my first playthrough I didn't die to any of the bosses besides the Siren by just reading the wiki page prior to engaging them. In general I think I only got party wiped in 3 boss fights in all my playing; the Countess, Siren and the Fanatic. You can fairly easily get away with killing them if your team composition is good and you know what you're up against.

I don't like the boss fights in Darkest Dungeon because most rely on a gimmick that you can't know about without metagame knowledge. Like, how do you know not to bring a Leper to the hag fight? By bringing a Leper to the hag fight because you don't know any better or else reading it somewhere. It's dumb...

Anyway, the bosses are completely optional. The only reason to fight them is, as No One said, if they're offering a decent trinket for beating them, and if you don't know anything about them you probably aren't going to have much luck fighting them. If you do know their gimmick, assuming you have suitable heroes available, the boss missions are actually often easier than a normal mission would be. So my advice would be to fight any boss you know how to beat, and otherwise don't even bother with them.

It's not dumb, it's literally the core gameplay loop of DD. Lose, but come back wiser and better prepared. I did my first playthrough largely without guide support and that's how I did it. Fitted in with the rest of the game and it's mechanics quite naturally. And of course, you get three iterations of each boss.
