Report a translation problem
It's a little hard to tell, because most of the fan art does depict him with a flintlock, but that isn't necessarily what Chris Bourassa had in mind.
A smoothbore pistol can fire shot just as well as ball. It's just not going to be a lot of shot.
Of course, Darkest Dungeon is set in not-Earth with fantasy weapons, so it's pointless (although fun) to speculate what some real-world equivalents might be. ;)
