Shadows are WAY DARK pretty much solid black, even areas that would normally be visible are swollowed by the black, I then stick to using at MOST 3 shades of a color, usually 2. So for like the clothing I usually use black as dark shadows, then have my base color of the clothing and then a half way color that I slightly blend the edges where the black touches the base color. If theres something really important like the helmet, I'll throw in a slightly lighter color for a highlight.
