If you want a fast pace game radiant is your way since it doesn't really decrease difficulty but reduces the requirements to upgrade both your heroes and the hamlet. But it also gives you less time to adapt to the enemies as you will take less time to advance.
Darkest difficulty is the original experience, slow paced and with selfish heroes not wanting to assist in low level missions once they level up over it.
Anyway there is no real game over in the game except in the toughest difficulty (stygian /blood moon) and the hamlet upgrades are permanent so recovery is fast after defeat.
Just your first gameplay will out value the cost in a buck/hour standard and the replay value just makes it even better. I say is worth.
again i only created this for stress relief i still play the propper version but here is my mod:

it even gives you a warning when you enter the game....
I have a hundred hours in the game - I'm used to it - but when a game gives you a problem and then apparently the solution hardly ever drops (blood) then I don't see the point.
