First of all, you can't take level 6 heroes into the very first Courtyard mission as it is classed as an Apprentice one. On Radiant mode level 5-6 resolve characters can enter only veteran level dungeons and higher. Only heroes up to resolve level 4 can go into Apprentice level runs.
Secondly, Invitations are tied to the infection levels that steadily rise as you do regular missions. Medium will trigger the Fanatic, and High will spawn an enemy that will drop the invitation.
The problem that people face is that they normally do the DLC on their old savefiles which makes getting to the DLC a grind. The DLC was mainly presented as an expansion to the original campaign, so the pacing would be better for those who started the new savefile. They would naturally trigger the necessary events to unlock the new Courtyard mission while doing the main story.
And back to the Crocolisk. The main problem is not that he is "hard" but the fact that most players do not expect to fight a boss on their first journey into the Courtyard as even the game does not state that. So most just end up wandering into the bossroom with a party hardly suited to fight him.
srsly? i thought it was fine.
even though that relied solely on the fact that they buffed the occultist to heal from any rank, my party got out with no afflictions or deaths.
Also, as a general thing, you should never have a party who can't hit the back row effectively because even in ordinary game the first thing you kill is the stress dealers in the back row to avoid stress building up
Im pretty sure btw that unlike most bosses or creatures that have come before, haven't had 2 states (and when i mean states, i mean the fact that the boss changes its stats when it is submerged compared to when it is stationary)
On a side note
you should expect pain when you get a dlc that makes the game harder "with some of the most complex and devious mechanics yet".
+ the darkest dungeon only alerts you because a retreat results in 1 of your heros having to sacrifice themselves to let the others escape
