EDIT: Just found out I was wrong! Dunno 'bout shovels, but there IS a use for Keys, and a potent one at that. The 'Stockpile' curio, which seems to pop up quite often late in a run will normally award you various 'curatives' when you activate it - Laudanum and Medicinal Herbs and maybe a bit of food. If you use a Skeleton Key on it, though, you get a guaranteed 20 food and a trinket to boot. That 20 food can be a lifesaver near the end of a long run...
