Darkest Dungeon with Backer Heroes?
Hey Guys. Just discovered this hidden mechanic.

I dont know, but frankly I feel this is something built in by the devs similar to a (please reduce difficulty) button for frustrated players who have lost veteran or above parties.

Anyone of you uses this btw?

Frankly I think it defeats the main purpose of the game which is making the most use of whatever situation a player is in (or whatever starting party) the player is forced to start with as well as upgrading stagecoach/etc.

I know of the backer heroes but never used them even once. Same goes for the backer trinkets.

How do they make things easier? Their stats are identical as the random heroes who arrive in the coach - the only difference is that they come with locked positve AND negative quirks. Ultimately they are no different than Dismas and Reyauld.

When the Rng says "you die" to a character - it does not matter what the stats are - vanilla, backer, custom - it does not matter, believe me its been tested. Op hero or weak hero - they all die the same and just as quickly when their number is up.

Quirks are a game mechanic which is entirely random and based on RNG- yes.

Being able to select heroes from a pre-set build (where the positive quirks are totally in that heroes' favor is a beginner's way of saying- I wanna deal with less RNG.

Also, what's the point of even upgrading the stage coach for a high number of availability of heroes if you can select all your heroes from the get go?

IMO this mechanic is meant for 3 types of players.

1) Players who have selected a very challenging difficulty, and later finds out they are way over their heads like 20-30 hours down the road.

2) Veteran players who have lost countless elite groups/parties and want to train up another replacement hero.

3) A player who only knows to whine about RNGesus and how their skills can't be truly "tested" in a game (Guess what, ALL games have RNG in built in them, and whilst you can't control RNG, you can certainly take actions to minimize negative RNG and maximize positive RNG, as in~ making the most use of your given situation; the game's bread and butter.

Let's not even talk about backer trinkets.

Heh, this game reminds me a lot about Dark Souls series in which the community there has a popular saying; Git Gud lol.

As above has said, you cut out some of the randomness and work. Coach heroes start with 0-2 positive and 0-2 negative quirks, all random. Yes, they can be managed/remedied and, yes, a lot of negative quirks are of little consequence - but there will always be a variance in appeal based on them when filling that roster.

Meanwhile, Joe Soap who is aware of this feature can fill'er'up with any choice that gives them the least work/cost. Initial stats never change - quirks effect them, so if I had the choice between, say, "Preset Guy" with On-Guard / Robust / Ruins Phobe, vs random coach fodder with 0 positive quirks, Kleptomaniac and Compulsive - who do you think is more desirable / more cost efficient?

I've only seen this feature being used by people like Baer Taffy during a stream - I never have and never will use it as it feels like cheating, even if the benefits can be argued into minors. It all helps in a game like DD where getting a good start can set a huge tone on the rest of your save, or pepper your progressed save with presets rather than do the grunt-work if things go wrong.

I once did a play-through in which I almost exclusively used Houndmasters and Abominations. Since I didn’t want to wait until the Stagecoach produced enough of them I grabbed a lot of backer heroes instead.

The main purpose of this game isn't to make the most of whatever situation the player is in, it's to have fun. I'm not going to say this feature doesn't make the game much easier, because it does, but if people enjoy the game more with this feature then I see no reason to judge them for it any more than you might judge someone for playing radiant. (However, backer trinkets are just weird imo)

Most of the backer heroes suck. I usually just go for level 4s to replace legends who can no longer go to the DD.

Anyone have any of these heroes they like? I think Archer Emiya is the only good one.

How sad must you be, to be so desperately concerned with what other people do in a SINGLE PLAYER game?

Hey STFU and stop necroing old threads.

Do whatever the ♥♥♥ you wanna with your single player ♥♥♥♥ but don't need to flame the OP.

If u suck in the game, then u just suck. No two ways about it.

You can blame RNG, blame the computer, blame the sun, blame your mum, dad or even the ghost standing next to you but yourself and you still won't stop sucking at it.

Anyway, please stop responding and necroing old threads.
