Darkest Dungeon Multiplayer
Darkest Dungeon really needs a multiplayer component.

A chance to face off against another party, and have to choose to fight to the death or try to flee.

I can't see how this would improve the game. Putting PVP in a game based on RNG is like asking a fifth of your playerbase to hulk smash their keyboard.

What is up with people, not every game needs multiplayer, ffs.

It's always been made clear that DD will never have multiplayer or pvp - why do people keep asking for it?

Now - enemy hero parties that you could meet in a dungoen and have to fight against - that would make sense.

Not strictly multiplayer, but I remember the devs saying that in the next DLC, an endless survival mode will be available. There players will be able to compare their progress between themselves.

Sadly not having a lot of high hopes, after seeing what happened with the same idea in XCOM 2.

Except this isn't XCOM2 - and I fail to see how that is even relevant to DD.

Endless mode in DD will really put compositions to the test, so I'm itching to see how many people from the "What are your favourite comps/classes" threads change their mind when there is no end in-sight (other than gruesome death).

From Darkest Dungeon blog:

"A New Quest Type: Get lost in time and space as you confront unending waves of enemies, new and old, pushing ever closer to the crash site of the Comet. Survive as long as you can stomach, and compare your highest kill count with friends and rivals alike!"

From the bold part one can assume a scoreboard of sorts is going to get implemented where players could compare their scores against the other, which is exactly what XCOM 2 did.

It would be pretty interesting if Darkest Dungeon had some multiplayer capabilities. Definitely potential for it, but it really does not need it. The game is solid, maybe in a sequel or offshot we can see some interesting multiplayer aspects come out

I think a co-op wave survival would be interesting- one person controls 1 hero, 4 players max- 4 heroes max.

But I'd rather just have more single player content

Again, I fail to see how that's relevant. I could list video games from the 80's onward that use scoreboards. I just don't see any link between Darkest Dungeon and XCOM. So what if it was/wasn't liked/suitable or whatever in XCOM? We're not talking about XCOM. The upcoming Farm DLC isn't related to XCOM. This is Darkest Dungeon - something that isn't XCOM. There is no point comparing how X type of content did in XCOM to how upcoming content (that we don't know everything about just yet) will work for Darkest Dungeon.

Personally I don't see what the fuss is about - of all the games out there, especially one with clearly defined meta and a wealth of party compositions to test (whether for fun or serious), an endless wave format in this game will be relatively shortlived fun (I mean, there's only so much joy you can squeeze out of 'is this comp working or not') but, otherwise, a good comp-tester. It'll even be a much better format for showcasing the strengths/weaknesses of either full comps or specific heroes.

My only wish is that it doesn't resort to the typical meta-play of present-day DD. If we get a new mode and it's wall-to-wall of the same old 'kill backline, stall front-line' then not only will heroes remain static in the meta but comps will also be no-brainers.

If they can make it so that the mode throws constant curve-balls (re. not predictable), it'll add to the replayvalue and ensure it doesn't get stale as quick. If it's going to boil down to the same old formula as we have now, I could pull a list of comps out of my árse right now that would succeed, and a list for ones that will fail.

Regardless - my main point is that we don't know what we're in for just yet and that putting attention to how something similar in concept worked in some other game isn't exactly worth anyone's time.

Apart from the obvious similarities about both games that I'm not going to list here to derail the topic, my point was about the abuse of the scoreboard by hackers short after it was implemented.

I used XCOM 2 as an example because that's the first game that came to mind, this is probably a problem in any PC game that uses this kind of system. What happened in XCOM 2, is that in the 'challenge mode' that used scoreboard quickly appeared hackers running around with soldiers with infinite armor, aim, movement, etc, allowing them to do the missions in no time and flawlessly and topping the upper position of the scoreboard in a nonsensical way.

If the same system is implemented in DD, I don't think it's going to pass a lot of time until we see someone hacking the game running around with a comp with 100% PROT, or 100% DD resist, or some other stupid crap.

Of course that won't stop for enjoying the game in any way apart from player-to-player comparisons, and still there will be probably a way to differentiate legit players from cheaters, but well, since this is a discussion forum and this is a speculative thread, just mentioning what it might happen.

Hopefully it doesn't, but I am not sure it's even possible to stop it from happening.

Care to explain your position further? I'm just pointing out that people get mad when the opposition crits them 3 times in a row with a 5% chance. Against a computer we just think "cheaty random number generator is messing with me again" but against a human player, it almost seems intentional.

I see complaints about a 3 times crit from opposition, but no one complains when they score 2 or 3 crits at the enemy. Its easy to say life is unfair when it does not favor you... just too easy...
