The DLC class is ~$4.00 USD.
It adds 1 Character, trinkets, lore, events, etc. and even goes so far as to introduce a slightly unique event involving the character with new enemies.
But all of the above does not exactly seem Worth $4.
If you change the context.... Imagine if instead of it being an Official DLC character - it was instead a Paid Mod made by a community member. Providing all the same content for the exact same price.
In this context - most people would decry the individual of being greedy, selfish, and money grubbing. Inflating the price simply because he can as there is so few competitors providing equal content. The very definition of money grubbing.
... so when you consider that the Dev is going to have an easier time producing said content then a Modder that does not have access to the core code or original art palette... seemingly accepting the Dev DLC for 4 dollars while many of you would denounce it if it was Modder DLC for the same price is a bit of a double standard.
In the end after observing it completely - what was added, what it is, how it fits...
I actually agree that the DLC is a bit over priced.
From a consumer standpoint - i think any 'just adds 1 character' DLC shouldn't be more then $2.... sure you could make the argument that because it also adds enemies, mechanics, lore, etc. it is worth more - but at most that still would be ~$3.
If they added another class which had overlap in the abilities or theme, it would of seemed more worthwhile... but at 4 dollars for just 1 class and stuff around it is too much.
Instead of lamenting about money-grabbing and such, these people could just wait for a price drop, or at least be more polite, since RedHook is open to the players' feedback.
Or maybe they could start conversations about it so that more of the community becomes aware of the issue, allowing for thoughtful observation and discussion of it to occur... Because when some one genuinely believes their price point is fair - it kinda limits what discussion can occur about it....
As per your own link:
"... but we do think we have put enough value in there for the price. But obviously sales will let us know for sure how we do."
that isn't an invitation for the community to participate in a discussion - that is observing market analytics. Right now - a lot of people are willing to accept ~4 USD price points out of a kindness towards the devs... but what happens if this becomes the norm? Will that kindness last so long as Redhook pumps out such DLC?
Fun game.
Clearly, different people have different ideas of what money is worth. In my eyes, this DLC costed me less than a decent latte. At that point, it's a pittance, and not even worth the thought it would take to formulate a complaint.
If Red Hook flooded the market with this type of DLC, or revoked workshop functionality to push paid content more easily, then that'd be a different story entirely. But for literally one DLC of this size to come out and people to accuse them of 'money grubbing' seems very preemptive and inflammatory.
As for the double standard between Developers and Modders, the devs are the ones who own the IP. Modders work on mods because they want to. The devs work on this game not just because they want to, but also because it is their meal ticket. As was proven with Bethesda/Valve's paid mod fiasco not long ago, paid mods need a considerable amount of vetting and oversight to make sure things don't spiral out of control. And as proven with Bethesda's even more recent Creation Club fiasco, that is a very difficult thing to do.
Just as an aside, one thing that I haven't really seen mentioned is that the Shieldbreaker DLC also includes new narrator quotes. Not a lot of them, but enough that I'm shocked nobody has said anything about it. I'd have paid 5 dollars easily for this DLC, all things considered. But again, different folks have different ideas of worth. Neither opinion is wrong, but I believe both opinions should remain civil.
And accusations of greed and 'money grubbing' don't exactly seem civil to me.
But, with that, im fine. As long as the developement continues, ill gladly support the devs with my money...
that's dirt cheap compared to what other companies do.
