Keys and epic quests?

So, I'm a bit late with getting to the crimson court, but I'm happy to report that I do like what I've experienced so far. Epic quests...wow, something bigger than dd3 is a bit nuts but besides the point. The locked doors are easy enough to understand, but with you leaving and continuing quests later my question is this. If you retrieve a mandatory key, but then abandon the quest before using it on said door, what happens to the key?

Is it in your inventory when you resume? Does it go back to the chest it was in in the dungeon? Does it poof out of existance? Ect.

you get it in your inventory when you resume, but not picking it up / leaving it in the chest and leaving the dungeon my still may result in permanent key loss, idk if thats been fixed yet.

Oh dear, that's troubling to know there's a bug with it. I'll have to make sure to finish key segments at least before bailing if I have to. Thanks

As said, its fine if you have the key in your inventory and leave, youll get it back next time.
