lol did not know that happens
I'm not sure if when you run from the Darkest Dungeon if the survivors get the same special status that they normally do when you are victorious which places a little torch next to their names and makes it impossible for them to re-enter the DD. The other side effect of that special status is that it makes any character that adventures along side these heroes gain experience MUCH faster than normal. I think if I remember correctly you will also get a big EXP boost on the very next mission you run after a failed DD run. Finally, there is an ancestral item that grants bonus resolve experience.
Also, I believe there is some sort of recovery mechanic revolving around the stage coach which insures that so long as the stage coach has been upgraded properly, you are guaranteed some higher level heroes will show up there the next week.
