Call of Duty 1 Retail version won't launch on Windows 7 - SOLVED
volcanic_lightning님이 먼저 게시:
One and a half years later, I finally solved this problem thanks to the hard-working people at PC Gaming Wiki. As it turns out, the reason Call of Duty SP.EXE won't launch is because of DRM. Microsoft disabled the service to prevent loopholes that viruses could use to infect systems. It's all detailed in an article here[www.howtogeek.com] that was curiously posted the exact same day as this topic.

To enable the retail SP.EXE without using cracks, you must start an elevated Command Prompt (search cmd, right-click, Run as Administrator) and copy & paste the following:
sc config secdrv start= demand
This will re-enable the SafeDisc DRM that will allow you to play on Windows 7 and 8 (Windows 10 users, you're SOL). To disable, paste the following:
sc config secdrv start= disabled

I hope this helps anyone who found this topic through Google.

Hi. Hmm, that is very strange sounding. - Did you try patching them, and maybe it didn't finish installing the patches properly ? - then that broke the executables).

I have most of the updates for 7 installed, and my retail is working fine.

No, they were patched and worked perfectly only 3 months ago, I didn't do anything to them. They just stopped working and there's no info online anywhere about this issue.

Alright.. well, I'm not really sure then.. - i would try reinstalling.

I reinstalled COD2 twice, didn't work either time. Man, this sucks.

Exact same problem I'm having. Multiplayer works, single player (CoDSP.exe) doesn't. Weird.

Glad to know someone else has the same problem. I'm still looking to fix this as I need SP footage for a video I'm making. I've discovered that while the retail .exe won't work on Windows 7, the .exe from the old downloadable demo does. It has to be a problem with the .exe itself and not the game.

I do know SP requires the disk. MP don't. you can get cracked SP Exe's on game copy world. just make sure to get the right version.

I would of suggested this as well. I think I have always had to download the cracked (no-cd) executables to play on Win7 (retail versions anyway).

I had the disc in every time I tried but it wouldn't work. I do not wish to download an illegal cracked .exe as I believe there is a way around this mess.

Ahh, you did. Well. I don't know then, I am stumped to death.

Since I've never had an issue, and I can't think of any updates, or programs that would break just cod 1.

Yep, I too had my disc in. (And I would also like to avoid a crack... I have the nice GOTY edition box just looking at me...!) :steamsalty:
