It's as if the game is saying "HEY LOOK AT US, LOOK AT HOW TOLERANT WE ARE! ISN'T IT GREAT? LOOK AT THIS REGULAR STRAIGHT CHARACTER AND LOOK AT HOW HE INTERACTS WITH A LESBIAN. MAN THAT'S CRAZY FOR 2014, BUT IN THE FUTURE IT'S JUST COMMON."
If you wan't an example of a well written gay character, look at Sir Hammerlock. Doesn't wear it on his sleeve. Doesn't shout it from the rooftops because he's a normal person. He's not defined by his sexual preference, because that's just plain stupid.
And, mind you, I'm a person who disagrees wholeheartedly with homosexuality and gay "marriage" but I can lay my beliefs aside, and objectively comment and critique the writing for two characters and point out that the writing for one is terrible, while another is actually interesting.
...I don't really see how Janey throws said sexuality in front of you. In fact, I thought it to be subtle.
Er, everyone is showing a total disregard for human life and still the private bits are what cause controversity?
Man, you guys got issues ...
Janey's sexuality is as "subtle" as two trains crashing into each other on a bridge, followed by them falling into the water below.
Yeah, first female NPC we run into turning out to be a lesbian, hits on one of the female PCs/has dialogue about it with the other 3, complains about a dude hitting on her and how he needs to be killed, hits on female npc for her number and has that bizarre exchange with torque(where captain cuck says the friendzone is "misogyny" through him) is real subtle.
It's such a transparent and cringeworthy attempt at pushing an agenda by Captain Cuck and he fails at making her anything more than a mediocre rehash of scooter to boot.
Throw a gay/lesbian relationship in your face; end of the world and talking about tolerance.
This is life and the world we're living in today. It's not about tolerance; it's about REALITY. If there's straight relationships in a game there can very well be lesbians in a game as that's what the world is now.
I'm sorry to any Austrailians but to me every accent apart from English is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying (excluding people from Liverpool, that is a completley different level of torture)
But why does it matter if it's subtle or not? Are relationships only OK if it's subtile? Janey isn't subtile that isn't her character. She's straightforward and that's who she is. Poor soul. How ever do you manage to watch movies/shows and play other games with any type of romance in them. You must be so scarred for life being subjected to other peoples sexual orientation all the time. Even in public when couples hold hands. How do you manage with the PDA of hetro or otherwise?
Time to knock lillith and roland under the bus because she called Roland her boyfriend outright a time or two. Oh noes.
let me re-phrase it: Janey being a lesbo isn't the problem. the problem is that we get very little besides that to her character. she scavenges junk and makes the grinder and doesn't like kraggons and she likes girls instead of boys. we get very little other than that.
I believe Janey could have been a great character, lesbian or straight, but most of the focus keeps going back to her being a lesbian. it is nice to see her technological genius like when she gets you the stingray, fixes the oz kit and so on, and she does have her moments, but the focus is not very good.
similar to scooter and Ellie in borderlands 2, their personalities are more or less 90% redneck and hillbilly sterotype extremists with being dumb and violent, with a hint of incest from time to time, but it gets a little old on the subject fairly quickly. however, where scooter and Ellie could at least be a little entertaining, aswell as having a bit more varying rols in the story and sidemissions, Janye more or less relies on her being a lesbian a bit too much.
the point is, Janey ends up with little character and involvement after you first meet her besides her being a lesbian, and it gets tiring as it drags on through the whole game. in the beginning, it is a little funny maybe, but I feel it made more for some Athena X Janey fanfiction than a good character.
if her involvement and dialogue had been similar, she wouldn't be any better or worse as a straight character.
This is more or less just more emphasis on what I mean from here on out, just a heads up.
we go back to hammelock, he was an enjoyable character because he didn't rely on his gay-nes to win us over. we liked him for his assistance, funny-ish jokes from time to time and legit helping the vault hunters with some interesting quests, like the discovery of the caustic caverns and crystalisks, and who can forget the legendary bonerfarts?
the doctor in the echo logs from "doctors orders" mission, aswell as one of the patients are also gay, but there it is glanced over very quickly with little emphasis or focus.
someones sexuality doesn't make them a person or character. their personality and actions do! and yeah, you could argue that Janeys interaction with Athena is basiclly just Janey trying to get laid, but it gets old. wether it had been a straight or gay interaction, it would have (and did) get old.
Then were are all the complaints about Moxxi? She's just as obnoxious about it as Janey, but was the subject of little to no controversy.
