Can't play LAN
Hey,

The LAN mode doesn't seems to work for me.

I've got two PCs, both without firewall, both on ethernet connection, but when I hit "find game" ingame, I get a message saying "no game found".

Any idea ?

Thanks.

What error messages are you getting from Steam?

BTW, many games allow single-account LAN play the same way two people could play on the same console. One of the reasons I originally bought Borderlands was because it permitted this kind of play.

OK, whatever, but it does work and it's meant to (it's easy enough to stop if that's what the dev wants). So, maybe if you're not interested in helping the OP sort out their problem you can at least leave off with the bad information?

If you know it works then why don't you tell how because thats what most matters here at this point I am only aware of possible split screen but not two PC and one copy of game on LAN which is what litharan is asking about.

I already detailed everything I did to "make it work" in my post (#7, this thread). It's the same way we've co-oped BL, and BL2 before this game, over the years and with different computer set ups, and never with any sort of modding.

So, to reiterate, the steps are:
  • Game has been installed and run once on each involved computer. When the Windwos Firewall warning comes up, they OK the game through it.
  • Host starts Steam and goes to Online Mode.
  • Host starts BL:TPS and at the main menu presses N then clicks "LAN Game".
  • Other player starts Steam in Offline Mode.
  • Other player starts BL:TPS, then clicks "Find Game" and joins the Host's game.

For the OP, if Steam is throwing errors, you might want to reinstall Steam; I could help you try to troubleshoot it. I also haven't actually tried just killing Windows Firewall; instead I give BL and Steam permission to access the network and the internet through it.

For others, and possibly the OP: I would suspect the problem might be in how your LAN is set up, but without knowing what's specifically going on there, and what security programs you have set up, it's pretty difficult to help you troubleshoot. Thee first question to sort is can your computers see each other on the LAN even outside the game?

Also, it it possible we have different releases of the game? I'm using a North American release; I wonder if the LAN stuff might be disabled in some regions' releases?

ETA: Had some other thoughts:

  • Are both computers in the same Windows workgroup? IIRC, they do need to be.
  • Here are some other common LAN troubleshooting bits: http://www.lanpartyguide.com/troubleshooting.html
  • Note the bit about disabling all the extra network adapters (this is very important -- my host computer has both ethernet and wireless but if the wireless is up and going, the second computer cannot find any games hosted on it).

Try logging into your router and search for the UnP option, make sure it is enabled.

If that doesn't work, you need to again, log into your router and go to Port Forwarding. Add borderlands 2 to the list.

You could also try forcing borderlands 2 into accepting TCP requests instead of UnP. To do this:
Go to Borderlands 2 game in your steam application.
Right click and select Properties
Add to start up properties: -tcp

make sure you put a space after the startup path and the -tcp. If that doesn't work, let me know and I will see what else I can remember.
My wife's computer hates LAN and i've done a lot of work to get it going.

Hey,

I "cleaned up" my local network, uninstall all the netwok adapters, and then followed cruinne's tutoriel.

It works !

Thank you so much for your help.
