How to play Athena correctly?

This is my first Borderlands game and I'm really fascinated by the game's mechanics and leveling tree (you name it). And I've chosen Athena 'cuz I like melee, but I can't find any melee weapons for her and I'm now wondering at what level can I use Melee weapons for her? If it even exists now.. I'm currently level 13.

Are you talking about guns with melee attachments? Or actual melee weapons like a sword or club or something?

I just started making an athena who is level 18. All of the trees are reasonably good but the left and middle seem to be a wise choice to go. I respecced from the left (bonus damage and such with sheild throw) after I picked up an epic class mod last night which gave bonuses to the first three talens in the middle tree which make me tanky and hit rediculously hard with melee

No, there are no "melee weapons" in this game. It's all guns.

her default melee weapon is a sword (Xiphos) that she carries. But there are no other swords in the game. just guns with blade attachments.

Your melee attack won't change (Wilhelm kicks, Nisha has a whip etc.) If you're going for a melee build, look for weapons with a bonus to melee damage. Also class mods that increase melee effects, Nova or spike shields.

Sorry I can't get past the 'this is my first Borderlands game'. The first two are much better so put this sucker away, get BL1 {cheap,cheap} and play. By the time you finish with BL1 and 2, BL3 should be out and you won't have to play the presequel at all! Bonus!

Actually, I have had BL1 For like 1 year, had no motivation to play it. Today I just traded to a BL2 GOTY and currently downloading it since people say if you like the lore you should do BL2, even better if you'd do BL1. Hell some people say BL2 is better gamewise too :P

BL2 is better game wise than 1, but a lot of the stuff won't make sence.

I'd suggestgoing down Phalanx for Prismatic Aegis, Prepare for Glory, and Wrath of the Goddess. After that, go down wichever of the other trees interests you more (I personally went with Phalanx/Ceraunic Storm).

The melee tracking in this game is awful. You're better off going with her elemental tree combined with Phalanx and lelelelel stomp everything with 999 stacks and gazillions of lightning/fire damage.
