You can pretty much sit in the entrance of the arena, and snipe him, waiting for him to get in your view. You can even use your action skill if need be. Sitting there is a place where electric floor never hit you, and honestly you should be pretty safe, except if you use the nova shield from the quest, which is only 54 points of shields(don't do that).
If it's not enough, use a handgun.
Really, you shouldn't try to use the jump pads, and you shouldn't get inside the arena proper. Staying near the entrance is the safest bet to not get caught into crossfire. Plus you should get all the challenges in one go.
... If you reach Zarpedon...
I feel like a terrible person for saying that...
If that makes you feel better, on future playthrough you will have badass levels to give you passive bonus. That should help a lot. So the more character you make and complete challenges with, the easier it will get.
Also all the Borderlands games are easier with other people, even just another person to pick up/get picked up by takes out a large amount of frustration.
Doing ALL of the side missions is a good idea though as that helps in the gun department.
When he fires the shock balls at you, you have to shoot them or they will home in, strip your shield and kill you pretty quickly.
When you enter there is a jump pad to your right on a small step, jump onto the step next to the pad from behind, Deadlifts intro starts just as you pass it.
Wait for the intro to finish then use the pad to get to the next pad straight ahead and up.
Use the next to go back towards the entrance and up to the next one.
From there the next one is directional to the left and up again, from there you can either pass Deadlift to the next one and then up to the top level and snipe from there or go toe to toe if you're good enough.
You should be able make all of the jumps in one motion with a bit of practice, it helps if you can slam each pad.
Don't forget to shoot the balls and try to get head shots if you can.
You won't be able to use Golden keys until you get to Concordia so forget that.
A bit long winded dut hope It helps.
I personally find him annoying for 2 reasons
(a) the trash mobs with him (the FFYL fodder) tend to stay so far away, that most of the time, if I need to kill them, I'm in trouble cause I'm stuck trying to shoot the sniper rifle from the hip at a target across the arena.
(b) the homing shock missiles he releases when he jumps seem to force you to take cover, but there's relatively little cover.
overall, I tend to be successful if I can attack indirectly -- claptrap with "misile turret" pet, or "trap nomancer" pet or "fire/acid pet", wilhelm's wolf drone, etc. Just because that gets some damage in on the boss while I remain safe. It's not really required tho, it just makes things easier.
I let them pick away at his shield, while hinding some place (the stairs between 2 of the layers, or near a big rock, or near one of the post things he stops at. I make sure I have a powerful close range weapon, like a 3 or 4 barrel shot gun, and if he gets close, I clobber him as much as I can.
At the start I like to try for some headshots with sniper rifle, but if I get knocked to FFYL with the sniper rifle, it's pretty much pointless cause everything is far away.
While he can be annoying, Id be suprised if you could not get past him, at all. With a friend, you'd have the advantage of being able to revive one another.
where you fight deadlift is kind of L shaped - were you come in, it goes foward, and then turns to the right.
From where you come in, if you so straight foward, and jump up about "fifty feet" to one of the platforms, there are 2 levels which have a stairway between them (and a hole in the floor between them too). (if you were coming from the direction where you started, the stairway is to the left side of the 2 platforms)
Those stairs can be a pretty safe place to hide and let your shield recharge. The little guys might chase you there, but those you can just kill. If the boss chases you there, I would try to blast him a couple times, then run up or down to the other floor. If he electrics one of the 2 floors, just move to the stairs and goto the other one.
Mostly DONT use the jump pads if you can help if. while you are floating in midair, everything is going to get a clear shot at you.
other places you can try to hide -- from where you start, if you go foward on the ground, to where it turns a corner, and run uphill, there's a large rock sticking up like 15 feet. sometimes you can hide next to that rock, keeping it between the boss + you.
Or, way at the top, towards where you eventually leave the arena (from the start, its forward and right, all the way up) there is one of those funny mechanical pillar things. again, you might be able to use that as cover.
I forget if the exit is open before the boss dies. If it is, you could also be up top, and go thru the exit to the hallway where the red chests are, and pop out of the hall back into the room to take shots at him. But I suspect that door is closed until the boss dies.
If nothng else works, then I guess I would reccommend finding a buddy who could join you.
Do you get both reward weapons at the beginning? As others pointed out, the easiest way to kill Deadlift is to stay near the entrance of the arena. The shotgun you get as a reward at the beginning (if you get it, that is) is powerful enough to take out Deadlift quickly. Also, all achievements can be achieved thus in one go, and it is perfectly possible to get them all at first try.
Get a level as high as possible. Completing all the side quests easily gets you to level 6, with a little grinding you can even get to level 7 before facing Deadlift. Besides, you can and should shoot his homing shock missiles out of the air, so that they do no damage to you at all.
