1: Do you have funds in your steam wallet? See the amount up near the top right of the steam client? Click on that and it will take you to your account details. In this new window, you can click tabs to see various items and transactions, but the very first tab shows you all of your game licenses - including how you got them (retail, steam store, gift)
2: Click on STEAM in the upper left of the steam client. Then choose settings. In the top right of the settings window you will find a link to "View Account Details". This takes you to the same place as outlined in step 1.

Steam has a built in log of what was gifted to you, under "_'s Account -> Account Details -> Licenses and Subscriptions". However, this doesn't list who gifted them to you. There doesn't seem to be any way to get at this information from inside Steam.
The best way seems to be to check your mail; every time you're sent a gift, Steam sends you a message at the email address it has on file. Look for messages from a @steampowered.com address with "received a gift" in the subject line.
