The first launch of BL-TPS seemed fine except for this error... I was able to start a toon, it saw my other BL versions/saves and gifted me some "loyalty" stuff.
According to Protondb and some online searches, some folks have been able to correct this by adding a corrected SSL path in the launch options... this did not work for me. But I also learned that the Linux version of the game is older that the windows versions; which means cross-platform multiplayer/co-op will not work as the game clients will see the version mismatch... and a likely incompatibility with the save files for Windows versus Linux.
So I did the following:
1) uninstalled the game
2) went into it's properties and forced it to use proton experimental
3) reinstalled the game (getting the windows version, via proton)
4) copied the "My Documents/`Borderlands`/WillowGames/SaveData" files from BL1 and BL2 into the BL-TPS PFX/proton path
5) launched the game, confirmed connection to steam/shift servers, started a new toon, it saw my previous BL saves (from previous step), gifted me the "loyalty" stuff, and played the intro without issues before shutting it down and returning to BL2 to finish TVHM
