Authenticating with Shift?
When I start the game and get to the main menu (after title screen), it says something about 'Authenticating with SHiFT server'. I don't have a Shift account, and am pretty sure I turned off an option about that in the options menu ... What's it doing? Why? Can I turn it off?

The game applies hotfixes during that time. If you’re not connected to the internet it will skip past that step, but you also won’t have hotfixes applied.

All Gearbox games offer a service called SHIFT which authenticates your game online when you start new gaming sessions. It'll saying "authenticated" when you're successfully connected to their online servers. It allows them to feed you some fun freebies in your current and future Gearbox games and it feeds you patches and updates to the game you're playing whenever these become available. SHIFT also activates a special chest that can give you free purple and blue gear with new monthly codes obtainable from Gearbox on Twitter and Facebook. If you didn't enroll in their SHIFT program when the game first offered it to you, you can request they do so via their website's software support service - they'll answer by email promptly https://gearboxsoftware.zendesk.com/hc/en-us Have fun :steamhappy:

Of course the service is optional. If you like playing offline, it won't activate / authenticate.

Yeah, I remember SHiFT codes from BL2. I didn't sign up for an account for that, then or now. In BL2, it didn't give me this message about "Authenticating with SHiFT server", even when playing online. So, why is TPS checking in with some SHiFTy server if I *don't* have an account and don't want one? I do want to play online, but not use SHiFT.

(AFAIK, in BL2, updates were handled seperately from SHiFT.)

(And, IIUC, this isn't really so optional .. seems like I'd have to unplug my connection, and have my whole computer offline, to not connect to Shift.)

That's why I gave you their address - just click the link and ask them or tell them whatever you want directly. I'm just another customer like you trying to help you out. Good luck:steammocking:

Really? It sounded like you were giving me their address to enroll in SHiFT, after telling me what SHiFT is. Which was not what I asked. Thank you for *trying* to help, but if you don't have any useful info ... answering a question I didn't ask is not actually helpful.

I have no interest in getting you to install anything. What you "think it sounded like" is of absolutely no interest to anyone except you.

You asked us how do you turn off something you never installed. So people tried to help. None of us succeeded. Maybe it's your questions people found confusing:

"What's it doing? Why? Can I turn it off?"

Since you never installed it, it's not doing anything. If you "think it sounds like it's doing something," just ignore it & don't use it if you don't want it. If you installed it by mistake, uninstall it. That's everything ~ this isn't rocket science.

Really? OK ... If you found my question confusing, you could have asked for clarification. Or ignored it.

But, to take you at your word ... I'll try to make my questions clearer:
"What's it doing"
-What is the game doing when it says "Authenticating with SHiFT server"?
"Why?"
-Why is it checking in with a SHiFT server even though I didn't register an account, and turned off the menu setting?
"Can I turn it off?"
-Can I turn off the checkin with server?

Is that better? Are you still confused?

Since you never installed it, it's not doing anything. If you "think it sounds like it's doing something," just ignore it & don't use it if you don't want it. If you installed it by mistake, uninstall it.
Your turn: what "it" are you talking about? I did install the game. AFAIK, SHiFT is an account, not something that can be installed / uninstalled.
