Dismemberment +, the torch, banner and fire arrow mods allong with a few weapon collections are the only ones which are reliable.
The kind of overhauls that change gameplay crash constantly, and Taleworlds changes their code so much that a lot of modders have given up.
The core of the game is what it is, but mods do a great job of customizing the game.
Personally, I prefer mods that make the game more challenging and favor battle. Others no doubt have different preferences.
It would be great it there was a mod that allows you to create your own armour or promote lords from your own armies
I have some that were last updated in EA, so I wouldn't worry so much about what version they are for. They seem to work with anything. The real drawback is their size. Those files can be massive. But hey, looking good comes with a price sometimes. :)
There's a mod called Distinguished Service. Troops that get enough kills are eligible to be promoted to full companions. You can set the kill limit, and what other skills they learn. You can also decide not to promote them if you have enough companions. This can make for obscenely powerful companions if one of your troops got a bunch of kills with a catapult or the like.
There's other mods - Companions Expanded or More Hero Interactions, I forget which - that allow you to adopt companions into your family. Then they can get married, have kids, all that. Or you can promote them to their own clan if you're a faction leader, but that's a vanilla thing.
so if you really want some good mods i'd recommend going to nexus and picking out a handful of ones that catch your eye and downgrading the game to what ever version they need and then working off of that
I recommend sticking with vanilla. Its the most stable bug free way to play.
When I played through Skyrim at release, there was not much mods for it at all. Vanilla did just fine. Without mods Skyrim doesn't offer much replayability though.

More fun for mercenaries because much more opportunities in and out of combat. More fun for traders because absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ economy. More fun for people looking to start up their own kingdoms because not big enough factions to just nuke you out of existence right after you start. Not to mention power blocs are nearly impossible to predict. Its just so much fun overall.
