Generally I start combat without hitting any commands while I go ahead and try to get the fight started. Once the enemy is near my troops I then hit the F1+F4 so that my melee cavalry do their wedge charges, my shield wall infantry gradually walks its way carefully to the enemy, and my archer cavalry shoot from distance making sure not to let themselves get hit.
I've never used F6. What does it do?
It works most of the time, but sometimes it can be stupid and cost you. If you see them being stupid just F1+F3 it. That's what I do.
Of course, the AI can sometimes decide they want to be defensive. I usually tell them to charge. F6 causes the most issue when you're assisting in a battle, and your troops and the AI aren't following the same strategy.
