Is F1+F4 always better than F1+F3?
Is F6 the command to rule them all?

F13 is the one command

I sometimes use F1+F3 near the end of a siege when I want my soldiers to hunt down hiding stragglers. But I never use F1+f3 in open combat or where I'm facing even or larger forces than my own as that would suicide my range troops by making them charge.

Generally I start combat without hitting any commands while I go ahead and try to get the fight started. Once the enemy is near my troops I then hit the F1+F4 so that my melee cavalry do their wedge charges, my shield wall infantry gradually walks its way carefully to the enemy, and my archer cavalry shoot from distance making sure not to let themselves get hit.

I've never used F6. What does it do?

AI formation automates. Can be useful, especially for cavalry since it can sometimes perform maneuvers that are difficult for the player to direct.

That's helpful. Thanks. I'll play around with it my next fight of 50 or 100 cavalry against 200 or 300 to compare it against F1+F4. What you describe sounds like something I'd like.

Sometimes they are stupid. Like when your archers decide to ♥♥♥♥ off to the back of the map leaving your infantry to die. Or when your HA decide to huddle up at the edge of the map. Or when your cavalry are just hanging back while the rest of your troops and in the thick of it, instead of flanking.

It works most of the time, but sometimes it can be stupid and cost you. If you see them being stupid just F1+F3 it. That's what I do.

I use F6 when my troops are far away (usually 250-300 yards/meters and beyond). That way my forces stick together as they advance without me needing to keep an eye on them.

Of course, the AI can sometimes decide they want to be defensive. I usually tell them to charge. F6 causes the most issue when you're assisting in a battle, and your troops and the AI aren't following the same strategy.

I use f6 when I'm leading cav charges. I'll F6 "follow me" my cav, ride round back of the enemy so I can get at their archers then when me and the cav are like 30ft away from the archers I'll f6 (the AI will charge then skirmish) or I'll f3 (the AI will charge) then f6 immediately after the charge meets the line and just continue to ride through the rest of the army in formation. Works pretty well.
