Sumpter horse or mules not equippable
How am I supposed to raise my companions' riding skill then? Is this a bug :o?

It's a bug that will proably be fixed one day soon.

You can make a quick fix yourself.

In; Steam\steamapps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\Modules\SandBoxCore\ModuleData\spitems

You will find a file called "horses_and_others"

Use Notepad++ or whatever editor you want.

Change "difficulty" to 0 at line 771. and save the changes. You can now equip saddle horses to companions with no skills.

If you want to change it for other horses types you can do that as well. Just do a searech for the horse type you want to change.

It should be noted the entry at that line is for saddle horse, not sumpter horse. Though I changed it anyway because sumpter horse is already set to difficulty=0.

There is 2 entries though. One for Tournament rules, and one for regular. Tournament rules already have horses set to 0 Difficulty. Also, I did mention it was for Saddle Horses in my example above -)

I like to keep companions out of harm's way anyway, so I just make those horseless companions formation V skirmishers and have them follow me in battles. And I give them some of my better loot armor, although I really do not know whether that armor thing works.

Every companion can ride a low level horse, like midlands palfrey. They ride in battle, they increase their riding skills..

Incorrect.

If the player or any companion has LESS than 10 riding skill (which many of them do), then they cannot currently equip ANY horse unless they came with one already equipped like the player does at start. If you remove the starting sumpter horse, it cannot be re-equipped as they are no longer classed as a rideable mount.

The only way around it until it is patched is to either edit the files as mentioned above, or fight in tournaments constantly & hope you or the companion end up on a mount and get some riding skill xp.

They were planning on making sumpter horses pack animals and making the Saddle Horse the level 0 riding mount. They did the first half and forgot the second.

Well that still brings up the question of wtf is the difference between a sumpter horse and a mule, function wise at that point. Still haven't got an answer aside from the fact that the former were rideable.

Sumpter horse is just... pack horse afaik. In rl you can fine ride a pack horse and a mule if you so desire. The most famous squire in literature... Sancho Panza, Don Quixote's companion did ride a Donkey after all.

Well, Bobby, we're glad you asked --

A mule is an animal with long funny ears
Kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny but his brain is weak
He's just plain stupid with a stubborn streak
And by the way, if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule.

But . . .

A horse is a horse of course of course
And no one can talk to a horse of course.
That is of course unless the horse
Is the famous Mister Ed!
