Losing ungodly amount of money.
I have 2 castles and a caravan led by a companion with 100 trade, but for some reason I'm losing almost 2000 a day. My castles have level 2 gardens, so they are getting the most amount of money they can. Anyone have any tips or info on how to get out of this financial mess?

Yeah. I'm having the same issue. I'm keeping myself afloat from wars... Everytime a war comes my bank account rises to 500k, only to drop thousands during peacetime. I have 2 caravans and a castle, and I ain't making anything.

Reduce garrisons. Don't boost prosperity. Focus on upgrades that bring in taxes.
Do not accept any more castles. They are cash sinks.

And as long as there is no war, just start chasing and clearing bandits and looters from around your holdings. This gives you income from loot and prisoners, plus it helps improve the economy in the vicinity of your castles.

(I hope your castles are at least close together. If not, let the crappiest one go next time someone attacks it.)
you can try buying some workshops, you can have a total of 6 and it is possible to lose them if a kingdom youre at war with takes the city theyre in. that plus taxes from fiefs are how i make all my money, its worth mentioning i dont really use garisons as its very easy to make them desert if you need to, and instead set castles and cities to the train militia project.

Sorry Marduk, I'm not buying "for some reason" when it comes to losing money. There are too many screens or tool tips that itemize your finances ... :P

Unfortunately, peace is not good for the pocket book. Having expensive units during peace time is ugly. Player's wanted "more peace" and "less war", and now they can't manage their funds.

No doubt, their are more than three ways to manage the funds :

1. Cheese the Smith
2. Use the dev console to get your money back
3. Donate expensive troops to a town that lacks a garrison
4. Perform quests
5. Kill bandit parties
6. Split off your troops to a clan party, let them chase bandits
7. Force a war (attack a village)
8. Use your influence and start a war (majority over 90% best chance)
9 <insert other ideas>
yes the smith is a great way to make money but i prefer not to do that unless i make a fine, masterwork, or legendary weapon i dont want, in which case i give it some fancy name and sell it.

How do I refuse them?

Easier said than done, dude xD.
Have you tried not having any troops. That saves you a bunch of money and just think about all that profit you can make from your castle with no troops.

^ this guy know whats up, no garison, just militia
I can see where you guys are coming with the "let some Garrison troops go" but the I'd lose my castle. I have a 250 Garrison there and with the castle already being a border castle I'm already scared of the khuzaits taking it.

Thing is, even with a Max castle, I'm not making enough to even cover my main parties wages... Much less the castles.

Attend the election to award a new fief. Every one of them. You can tell if they are going to try to give a fief to you because your name will be in the list. If the king is going to give it to you, use some influence to support someone else. (I would suggest the king if he/she is in the list.)

Usually, this is enough to avoid getting some crappy jerkwater castle on the battle frontier.

And after you have helped capture a few castles and craftily ddged getting them, you will be in a good position to use your influence to get a town.

I let King Raganvad dump a castle on me during my first playthrough, but once I figured out the drill, I have only received towns.

And not just any towns, either. Good ones that are situated nicely ( and near each other).

Current play-through -- I have one town, but that town clears 4000 gold a day and supports three armies (mine, my spouse's and a third one led by a companion) and a garrison of almost 500, plus a militia of over 400. I have three businesses bringing in 1200 to 1500 a day total, and three profitable caravans.

Good advice. I have noticed that no matter how many elite troops I have in a castle, they will still lose to an attacking army as the AI does at least know to outnumber them if they are going to siege.

I now actually have as few soldiers in my castle as possible due to the fact they are pretty useless.
lol I had above 70k and 150 soldiers consisting mostly of tier 3 and above troops. Now I have barely above 2k and starving farmers for soldiers. I've done new games way too many times to even try again. Thats after removing all troops from castles and giving them away.
