If you don't pick the refining metal/charcoal skills it's going to be somewhat slow going trying to get the materials for forging, because you can only get materials from smelting weapons. Also, try to forge things within your difficulty. You level up faster.
Assuming you're using a mod such as Community Patch to have all perks working, these are my choices:

Efficient Charcoal Maker - Charcoal is a must. You get iron from smelting, easily.

Curious Smelter - Better to unlock better parts more quickly. You get steel from smelting, easily.

Curious Smith - Better to unlock better parts more quickly. You get fine steel from smelting, easily.

Steel Maker 3 - I don't think the miniscule stat increase is worth it. Better to go with a better source of Thamaskene.

Practical Smelter - You'll spend more time smelting than refining (mainly charcoal). Better to decrease the stamina usage from doing that.

Vigorous/Controlled Smith - Choose based on your character's build.

Practical Smith - Trade prices are pretty OP right now (75,000 Denar for two handers for example), so the hit you take on selling the product isn't that big of a deal.

Master Smith

Fencer/Enduring Smith - Choose based on your character's build.

Sharpened Edge/Tip - Choose based on whether you use slashing (Edge) weapons or piercing (Tip) weapons.

Siege Expert - I don't think the miniscule stat increase is worth it. Better to go with improved siege ability.

Does the Community Patch fix the problem where smelted weapons show up in the towns inventory?

I have over 100 of my smelted creations sitting in a town's inventory ... :(

That's not a bug is it? Crafted stuff is distributed into the town inventory.

Try it .. make something cheap, give it a crap name (i.e Smelt Me), then look in the town's inventory. If it's not immediately there, then exit the town and enter again.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't sell my creations, I smelt them.

Go with all the steel maker perks. Easier to start and still useful later. Build a smithing companion with the other branch of the tree.

Sorry to continue off topic, but to make matters worse ....

The smelted weapon not only shows in the town, but if it meets the conditions to be included in a tournament .... I can win back my smelted weapon !!!!!

To note ... I'm running the latest beta vanilla, but I cannot tell how old it has been a problem. If anyone is running a mod that makes tournaments rewards better, then if you know the max rewards amount for the trophy, you could probably loop the problem even more ... :(

u should try to make javelins. they only need 1 iron + 1 wood and u can sell them for over 100k.
and javelins increase your smithing skill very fast.
just keep some compainions in your group and get all the perks through multiple characters. recipe are also shared so you can use the companion to farm recipes and if youre like me try to get a master craft on a weapon you like.

I second this, weirdly for some reason javelins level you up like crazy and you can farm a lot of recipe this way, 2-h polearms and 2-h swords also give huge amount of xp but i think javelins are better

What if I don't even have the parts yet?

Which is a problem because I play a javelin build, and in 1.2 at least, the good javelins are nowhere to be seen.

This is incorrect. Forging things within your difficulty only effects the chances of stat modifications (up or down). XP is based on the value of the item crafted. It is always recommended to make the most expensive item you can to maximize xp gain. (2H swords for example)

Charcoal refining is your best friend.....wait....your best friends should get it too.

You start with 2h sword parts. Use those until you get better blueprints (randomly)
