Gray Matter works with Windows 8.1. Only thing with the steam version is that with Windows 8.1 a needed DirectX Update for older games doesn't get installed automatically. You have to download and install it manually.

You can download the Update here: Link[www.microsoft.com]
If you doubleclick at the downloaded file you have to choose a folder to extract the update into. Afterwards you have to go to this folder and doubleclick at the file dxsetup.exe to start the installation of the update.

The update identifies itself as DirectX 9.0c update. You don't have to fear that it downgrades your current DirectX installation (10, 11, 12). The update checks for more current files and leaves them untouched. But it installs libraries needed by games created for DirectX 9. These libraries simply coexist with libraries of more current DirectX versions.

Second question is if the hardware of your system is sufficient. I don't have a definite answer to this. My answer is: It should be. When the game was released it had performance and compatibility troubles with some integrated graphics solutions. With older ones it didn't work, with some the performance was very low, with some there were some graphical artifacts and with some it worked quite ok if up to date drivers were installed. Especially with integrated graphics of the Intel HD 4*** series it often worked ok. Your system uses integrated graphics Intel HD 5500. That one is a successor of the Intel HD 4*** series. So my guess is that it will work. But since the game was released long ago not many people are writing about the game anymore. So there's no info if someone has already played the game with Intel HD 5500 graphics. Therefore I can't say for sure if it works.

I have upgraded to Windows 10. I'm assuming your advice about manually downloading DirectX 9.0 applies in the same way? I'm assuming Win 10 needs a manual install of DirectX 9.0 just like Win 8.1, correct? Thank you for all your help.

I'm not sure if a manual install is needed. But it wouldn't hurt if you try it. The DirectX 9.0c update only install DirectX files that are missing and replaces DirectX files with a lower version number.

(btw. - I'm using Windows 10 and the game works without any problems)
