Conditions for gaining a fourth Discipline from Beckett
Which variables allow you to gain a 4th discipline when speaking with Beckett after the Giovanni mansion? I ended up with Celerity as a Gangrel, but I was wondering what other possibilities there could be.

When do you get it and what do you need to tell him to teach you a new discipline?

Wait, WHAT!? When the hell was this a thing!?

Have all your Disciplines maxed (to 5) before talking to Beckett after the Giovanni mission. You will get a 4th Discipline. I was only able to raise Celerity to 3 as a Gangrel, but it was helpful.

I don't think this is correct, you can choose the other disciplines as well:

[+: or Animalism [0] (For all except Nosferatu)]
[+: or Fortitude [0] (For all except Ventrue)]
[+: or Protean [0] (For all clans)]

Oh, so that's why i never got it. There's always that one discipline that i didn't put XP into. Next time i'll raise all of them.

So I just learned Animalism from Beckett? Without having three maxed out Disciplines?

My hypothesis is that it has to do with having a high Humanity score because I told him humanity is important when we were talking and it led to a bit of conversation involving the Beast I can't remember

This game is so full of skill point traps it's ridiculous. Even when using a guide I accidentally put 5 levels into charisma before realising that the Pearl of Dubai would've compensated for the fifth. So that's 16 skill points down the drain, basically, unless a Persuasion score of 11 is needed for anything.

I'm only using the guide to avoid crap like this: you have to put a specific number of levels into a skill before you read a skill book or speak to a specific NPC who awards specific skills at specific times BUT NOT ABOVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT EITHER, OTHERWISE YOU CAN'T READ THE BOOKS OR LEARN FROM NPCS, AND IF YOU REALISE YOU'VE SPOKEN TO NINES TOO LATE TO GET MELEE 5, THAT'S TOO BAD; YOU'VE MISSED OUT ON ANOTHER 12 POTENTIAL SKILL POINTS BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT PSYCHIC. OH, AND IN ADDITION TO ALL THIS, YOU HAVE TO GET EACH AND EVERY DISCIPLINE TO LEVEL FIVE SOMEHOW BY A SPECIFIC POINT.

I hope they don't do this in Bloodlines 2.

That's just hidden bonus stuff meant for subsequent playthroughs and for people who like to min/max builds. You can play and finish the game just fine without knowing where to get Brawl 5 or who teaches what skill point. It's meant to be discovered organically by large numbers of people, and that's exactly what happened. Then those people wrote guides and now we know how much to level which skill and when if we want to min/max.

But you're making it out like it's necessary to complete the game. It's absolutely not, you can have a trash build and still finish the game. The skill points that bother you aren't needed for finishing the game, they're there in case you discover them, to keep the game fresh every time.

Aha, but there isn't a Brawl 5 skillbook or NPC trainer. It's actually Melee 5. You've fallen foul of the fine details again, just as I did, and it's perfectly possible to come across certain occult items gained in side quests (not secrets) right after you've invested the final fifth level in them. Namely the Pearl of Dubai, Braid Talisman, Antique Locket and possibly Heart of Eliza (I'm not sure if Melee Combat can increase beyond 10 and give a benefit). In fact, looking at it, I'm beginning to understand why certain occult items were removed from the base game. They are mostly the offending articles and just frustrate matters.
