Is this the best roguelike game?
I have been looking through a lot of games, seen a lot of videos, but can't find out which one is the best one?

I don't want to learn the mechanics in a lot of games, but just buy one and play that one.

I like games where you have to think a lot, and games with lots of new places to explore. Graphics does matter, but gameplay is more important.

Any suggestions? BTW I am new to this genre.

Dungeons of Dredmor and Sword of the Stars: The Pit are pretty good roguelikes and are not that hard to grasp. Sword of the Stars: The Pit is pretty brutal though.
I don't like Sword of the Stars AT ALL due to the slow animations constantly breaking the game flow. Dredmor is good though

To each their own I guess; Yeah the animations get me too sometimes but I got used to them.
Imo the best after ADOM. I like these two for having open world. Cant play games that are based on dungeons like DCSS or dungeons of dreadmor for too long, I find it boring.
Somewhere I posted my own tops of Roguelike spread in two categories, action and turn based. And after a hard thinking and thoughtful decision, I think I put Tales of Maj'Eyal first in the turn based category, despite I never finished it and played at max 10 runs with the save feature.

Why I didn't put ADOM... ADOM use too much abstruse rules and mechanisms, it has a too high nasty/sadistic level, I don't appreciate at all how it made pets poor things dedicated to death. ADOM is a dam impressive example of random generation structured (I think kids now name it procedurally generated, perhaps it makes look smarter) but I don't like at all its design spirit, not at all.

I'm curious of the coming ADOM enhanced version from Indiegogo crowfunding but I have low believing that I'll enjoy, I believe the dev is a sadist (an inoffensive one) and he won't be able gave up on that traits from his games. :-)

EDIT: Anyway I checked the video of the campaign funding and knowing the game is developped since 20 years and the guy looks like a teenager, he is clearly a vampire, this explaining the traits. But it's not a surprise Germany is close to Transylvania.

Darkgod is a sadist too. Just ask any long time player how many spanking references are in the game and they can confirm it.

ToME has it's holiday events that also confirm this, like Spanksgiving and such. That said, there is nothing at all wrong with Darkgod being a sadist. He can live his life how he chooses with my blessing so long as he keeps making a game for us to suffer and die in for his amusement.
I love this thread. Since it's served its purpose, I don't think it's too much of a hijack for me to ask--what're y'all's thoughts on Project Zomboid?

It isnt rogue like, but it os one of the best zombie survival games, if not the best.
It's one of the best; I haven't played all of the major ones out there yet.
I think I like Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup a little more; it's my favorite non-Steam game on my hard drive, at least.
I haven't played all the Roguelikes out there, but ToME is definitely one of the best. It's a true Roguelike, with *tons* of variety and, for the genre, fantastic graphics.

You see why I brought it up though, right? It's much more roguelike than a lot of games being called that. If it were turn based, I'd call it a zombie roguelike. You collect gear, you grind mobs, you deal with weird situations in creative ways, and once you've done all that, or before you get a chance to do any of that, you die. And the tagline really captures the essence of the roguelike for me: "This is how you died."

This and dwarf fortress are definitely two of the best roguelike games ever made.
Tome's extremely fun and awarding just like dwarf fortress but it's not as punishing and difficult to get into.
This is as good as a game gets even without the rogue elements.

This is probably the best ascii only game I know of. But ToME still wins for a number of reasons.

DoD is so choppy animation-wise, The Pit is a lot more fluid. There's also Claustraphobia: The Downward Spiral (probably one of my fav rogue-likes) which is even more clean and beautiful (animation wise) than DoD. Idk, I found DoD really hard to get into solely because of the constant need to click everything multiple times just so my character would move/ do an action and then the actions themselves are so painful to look at. I'm sure it's a great game underneath all of that however. The Pit is a great game, I recommend that 100%
Ther is also Troubles of Middle Earth the original ToME which is pretty amazing too based on angband give it a try The most complete version is 2.2.5 i believe Heres a link http://www.zaimoni.com/zaiband/Angband.ref/ToME/
