All classes have strong points and weak points and how you build and equip them makes all the difference. For example, Archmage is a very powerful but requires use of corners and careful play.
Doombringer or Berserker might suit.
If you have unlocked skeleton as a race then it is pretty powerful as well.
Edit: also, classes and builds are important, but do not ignore runes, infusions and torques. Keep items with you that compliment your build that allow you to remove stuns, poisons, heal, silence an enemy, teleport, run away fast etc. Don't just keep the "strongest" and newest item, make sure you are well rounded - that should take care of most things (apart from getting one shot by an archer or overwhelmed by a necro). This is where the game becomes a little complex and tactical, but switching gear according to the scenario will get you to a win.
So not recommended for a first playthrough?
is right.
Once you have died enough times, played multiple classes, and have expirenced the main quest line at least once fully, you should switch to Nightmare. Sounds "bad" but most people seem to forget highier difficulty = more and better loot. decent gear is 1/3of tome.
think of nightmare as you know how to control the game. You know about your resists and damage type, aware of penetration, what things to avoid, or be prepared for. nightmare is very very doable after you have gotten you loins girdled from enough deaths and expirence.
You will still get 2/3 shotted from time to time, but thats a coin toss eather way =]
Aaaaand I'm dead again
axekick + strangle (level 3 silence) = win
TS ask about first playthrough aka best default class with default race.
Then I tried a skeleton archer, and I completed the game with like 5 lives left on my first try. I tried it again and also did very well. Went back to bulwark, and beat the game, though with only 2 lives left.
This was many patches a go, but I really felt like the skeleton archer was a very strong class for my noob arse.
Awhile after that I tried a wood elf (forgot the name, 'T' something) wyrmic. Very confusing fairly complicated class since they have almost nothing in common with other classes. However I felt pretty darn strong, and I got to the orc p rides with many lives left. However each pride had some orc elites that just had some kind of self healing that I couldn't get past. Like the class had ok dps and great survivability. So anything with strong self-healing was very hard for me tackle. Eventually I just couldn't get past numerous self healing orcs in the prides as that class. oh well.
skeleton archer is very forgiveing for beginers. Well balanced great life great resists!
