Can you start with embers of rage?

title. Can you go embers of rage, if you didnt play ToME before at all? Or you will miss stuff?

Well, Lore-wise; Embers take place after Age of Ascendency; which "is default ToME".

So you may miss a lot of the conclusions and fully understanding the after-effects of your actions in Embers. While also missing a lot of the nods to your would-be Character in AoA and various other NPCs/Quests you performed in "ToME".

With that said; I believe you can immediately start a character in Embers without ever having created a character in AoA or other modes. Though I'd still recommend playing a "Normal" Age of Ascendency run in ToME prior to starting Embers of Rage. If only to familiarize yourself with the game and whatnot.

I really wouldn't recommend it. EoR builds directly on AoA's storyline, and in addition to what Setzway says above, that means if you play them in the wrong order, you'll spoil a lot of AoA for yourself, particularly the second half.
