early baddies can hit hard enough to knock you out, but NOT hard enough to trigger a fatality seqence. (severe ... critical ... comatose). so if you bite off more than you can chew you end up in a situation where the baddies beat your team down and no one is able to recover long enough to fight back. and because they can't kill you, the fight goes straight into limbo. this happened a lot to newbies at the Ag Center and Old Mine.
the best answer is to ditch your pistols and go with brawling attacks. you'll do more damage and do it faster, preventing your enemies from surviving long enough to beat you down. brawling attacks also don't rely on ammo, so you don't get caught having to try and reload a clip while five bunnies are pounding you in the chest. class 2 armor or a good rifle also help - just run direct to the store in Quartz and burn a few bucks. even just one rifle will change your world.
in any event, enjoy limbo-world it while it lasts. it's not long before those baddies start swinging for 12+ hits that will drop your guys straight into coma-town.
in any event, if you're still fightin' this game, i've heard that Fargo changed some of the mechanics, like nerfing organic skills growth on brawling. that being the case, you'll want to start your team with level 2 brawls across the board. then give your designated strongman level 3. that should be the break point that enables three attacks per turn. that plus high strength (17 or better) will turn your bruiser into a decent death machine. ....
USED to be, back in the day, that you could start with level 1 in brawls and by the time you finished the Ag Center everyone was buffed to 3 or 4.
i also gots dirty tricks & xploits that should still work, too, no matter what fixes Fargo decided to run ... if you're up for a bit of rule / game-bending. (some people are purists.)
