Means, their stats raise, but, their performance gets worse through a season and only gets updated at start of next season.
That may play a part in it.
But yeah, it does seem a little odd. I guess it might depend on how much weight they give every stat. In my first season at Alpine I also had a car that statistically never was a top 5 car but in the second half of the season getting at least one car in the points was relatively easy. If your cars are top 5 in cornering speeds they may perform quite well despite maybe their cooling being bad which would drag down your average performance rating.
