There are some key bugs,wall bugs and so on.
Developers dont look like they care about this game anymore, that is why,together with the game longevity, people moved away from this title at the moment.
I can assure you that you are not the only one that is having connection issues on the game, but you will get used to it.
If your problems as you are stating, are about a local lan connection, you should check if the wall ports are well linked and they are working well with,for example,other games.
Sometimes downloading affects the line b ut you already know that.
You can check on pc setting to allow the game to pass through the firewall if you have a floor router which links different floor ports, or in the modem setup unlock the ports that you need to use for it.
Beside this,to link this to what i previously said, if the "invite" doesnt work, it is their server fault and you cannot do something to make it work well.
