They're both good games but this one just feels better.
PS: Haven't played Hammerwatch _a lot_ so I might not have reached the part of the game which people find awesome so listen to people who've experienced both games equally.

The user scores are the same.
Leveling is a lot more interesting, unlocking some magics to use or some perks that truly boost your hero...
The different heroes are way more balanced too than this Gauntlet (what's this slow Warrior that make same amount of damage than the Elf who shoot arrows lot more quickly, seriously...)
And now, with the last update (free new campaign and 2 heroes), Hammerwatch give you a really lot more content than this Gauntlet...
Even the music feel more Gauntlet !
This Gauntlet could be great, but the lazyness of it's level design and the lack of reflection on the gameplay like balance of the heroes kills the game, for me at least...
It didn't even compete against the fantastic Dark Legacy.... It's remind me more the terrible Seven Sorrows, sadly...
Hammerwatch has tons more content and more of an RPG feel to it.
Gauntlet "feels" better to play and is prettier to boot.
Basically... play both!
Gauntlet 7/10
Hammerwatch 6/10
That right there. Gauntlet is pure filth, the only thing "procedurally generated" about it was the lies they told to sell it to us. It plays like a cheesy tablet game for petes sake!
- You always had to start from level 1 and most groups fell apart by the first boss. If you weren't in a serious pre-made group you were never going to get very far. The first few levels were extremely easy and boring once you knew what you were doing.
- The matchmaking system was worse than Gauntlets. Simply getting people into the game and having it work was a chore. It had lobbies, but that didn't really help. When you combined the technical problems of joining and resuming games with the lengthy play time requirements it seriously hurt the game.
While I am severely disappointed with Gauntlet's horrible UI, options, performance, online capability, etc... The action itself is still fun and I can jump into a multiplayer game without too much trouble since it doesn't really matter which levels you play. While Hammerwatch was fun to play too I got extremely sick of playing the first few levels only to have people randomly disconnect or leave before we got to the good parts.
Thanks for the help!
Uhhh... might want to actually buy the game before talking about it.
Gauntlet is also substantially harder to pick up control- and difficulty-wise, so if you've got friends that don't play many games, Hammerwatch may be the better call.
Lastly, Hammerwatch let's you have duplicates of a class. So you don't have to worry about forcing people to play certain characters when you have four.
